My Theme Portfolio

by Martyn Guess

I live in Dorking Surrey and earn my living as a Commercial property developer (or at least I did!!). I qualified to dive in 1995 and finished my Open Water course with my son Alex on his 12th birthday. He is now an Instructor specialising in Cavern diving. The following year when on holiday in Grand Cayman I was introduced to underwater photography by Cathy Church on a PADI speciality course. I quickly became hooked and bought my first camera a Nikonas V from Alan James on my return home.

All of the pictures for the Theme Portfolio were taken last November at Walindi Plantation PNG before I joined Martin Edge on a Photoquest trip to Loloata PNG. I was lucky to have such a photogenic subject even if it did keep hitting the dome port!

I used a Tokina 10-17 mm lense, fast becoming a favourite of mine together with my D300, Subal Housing and twin Inons. With the split shot I found it quite difficult to light the subject underwater whilst keeping half of the dome Port above Water and was very glad of my weight training trips to the gym! The three bottom shots were all naturally lit and being very shallow the underside of the surface had some fantastic reflections.
