My Portfolio

by Gareth Millson

I’ve been diving for seven years and started taking photos with a Canon S45 compact in 2003, I got my current Canon 20D in 2004, I use this inside an Ikelite housing with twin DS125 Strobes.

All of the shots in the portfolio were taken just off Middle Garden, Sharm El Sheikh on July 30th last year when we were fortunate enough to experience four 4-5m Whale Sharks cruising around a large sardine baitball.

All shots were taken in a single dive using the Canon 10-22mm WA lens with +2 Dioptre behind the 8” Dome Port.  This was a very dynamic dive, there were a lot of people in the water, at least fifty divers and almost as many snorkelers so in order to shoot quickly when the background was empty I chose to shoot mostly in Shutter Priority, selecting a shutter speed between 1/100s and 1/160s with -1/3EV exposure compensation and a speed of ISO 100.  For the close-ups, both strobes were firing on full power, were mounted on 12” arms and angled outwards slightly.   For speed during the silhouette shot the strobes were just rotated to point backwards instead of switching them off.

I’m half of Scorpionfish Underwater Photography with Videographer Pash Baker, our website is www.scorpionfish.co.uk
