2005
was the first year that I have had the immense pleasure of
diving with seals and I must say that it's possibly the most
fun I've had underwater. In July I had a week in Lundy and
in September a week in the Farnes, and both trips allowed
close up encounters with these wonderful creatures.
All
of the photos were taken on my Nikon D70 and Sea and Sea housing
with a 20mm lens. |

Towards the end of a dive in the Farnes I headed up onto the
top of reef on the lookout for seals, and was rewarded with
a group of 4 or 5 playing on the reef top in just a couple of
meters of water. Due to the shallow depth no flash was required
and all these pictures were taken on Shutter Priority. The whole
of the top row (1-3) were taken on this occasion.

We spent a lovely lunch hour in Lundy snorkelling with the seals
- they were very keen on fin tugging and great fun to play with
at the surface. Although there is no eye contact in this picture
I cant help but smile when I look at it.

I was at around 20m in the Farnes taking photos of the reef
when this cheeky chap swam up behind me. I turned around really
slowly and managed to snap him once, as he immediately disappeared
with the speed of a polaris missile. I loved the expression
on his face.

As fin tugging is the favourite pastime of seal pups, I had
to include at least one in the portfolio of my fins being
attacked.
