I started diving in 1968 and, almost straightaway, purchased a Nikonos 11 with standard lens. Even secondhand, it cost a couple of week’s wages. However, it lasted only a few dives until someone accidentally trashed it and I could not afford to replace it. I eventually bought a Nik IVa in 2000 and dabbled with UW photography for the next few years. My enthusiasm increased and a housed Nikon F4 came along. However, it was the purchase of a D100 and Aquatica housing, plus joining the Bristol Underwater Photography Group www.bupg.co.uk , that really got me hooked. I do more diving than I ever did and cannot wait to get back in the water. I now use a D200 but also enjoy using a Canon A540 compact from time to time. It’s usually in my BCD pocket when I’m using a wide angle set up on the D200, enabling me to capture images such as the xeno crab which otherwise would be missed.
My thinking behind this portfolio was to show a mixture of photographic techniques with a balanced overall appearance. Three blue water images and three black background images seemed to fit the bill. I went for a dynamic appearance with the wide angle images and for a colour match with the squat lobster and crab.
