Congratulations to Kirsty Andrews who was the winner of this year's Best of British competition with her close up image of a nudibranch and wide angle shots of a blue shark and a seal.

Congratulations also to Henley Spiers and Rob Bailey who came second and third respectively. Henley's portfolio comprises wide-angle shots of Blue Sharks and of a jellyfish, plus a slow shutter speed image of a spider crab. Rob presented a nudibranch close up, a colourful wide angle scene with a diver in the Scillies and a seal.

SS Thistlegorm
SS Thistlegorm by Simon Brown, Jon Henderson,

SS Thistlegorm. The ultimate guide to the World's greatest shipwreck

A team effort (co-authored with Simon Brown, Alex Mustard, Jon Henderson and Mike Postons), the book is a detailed guide to the famous Thistlegorm wreck in the Egyptian Red Sea and hopefully essential reading for anyone who has dived there, or plans to.

Because of the 3D interactive content it is currently only available in iBooks format. Link below or go to your iBooks account and search "Thistlegorm" - link below should work - but make sure it directs you to your country's iBooks Store:
https://itunes.apple.com/book/ss-thistlegorm/id1438769165…

The book probably has more underwater photos in it than any other - 25,000! Although most were used to create a 3D photogrammetry model of the wreck and cargo - which you can interact with in the book (spin, zoom, flip etc). We've got still images of all the important features (there are 120+ of my 'classic' images - all of which can be viewed full screen) as well as shots of surviving examples of the military vehicles and period images specially licensed from the Imperial War Museum. They even built a 3D model of the ship from the original builders plans.

Annual Competition  -  Best of British

Definition: A portfolio of 3 individual images that showcases both variety and beauty in the underwater world of British waters.

Tobias Friedrich - Entering competitions in general and what to do to achieve success there.

In his childhood Tobias Friedrich loved to watch the adventures of the Calypso with Jacques-Yves Cousteau as its captain and the beauty of the world that is below the ocean's surface. It's still an overwhelming feeling for him when he has the chance to dive. He loves the elegance and calmness of the world under water in contrast to the hectic atmosphere above.

Tobias lives in Germany and started taking pictures with a DSLR underwater in 2007. Since then his images have been published in prestigious scuba diving magazines and newspapers around the world. Several underwater photographic competitions, have honoured his work, resulting in over 50 awards with nearly 30 1st places. Lately he has been named “Underwater Photographer of the Year 2018” in the prestigious UPY competition. All waters, from zero to 30° celsius, are attractive for him, as long as there is something to photograph. He uses SEACAM equipment for his Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and 5D Mark II DSLR and is leading expeditions and workshops around the world, where everybody can join. He is also the author of Underwater Photography (right).
