Paul Colley - Bat Project update

Exactly one year ago, Paul, Chairman of BSoUP gave us a presentation called Daubenton and Dark Flash: lighting a new path to photographic creativity. This time he will give us a short update about his bat project.  Although not (yet) an underwater subject, the bat project has many technical and artistic lessons that could read across extremely well to most new photography projects.

Paul has spent the last 16 months developing a camera trap to take pictures of bats in the visible and infrared spectrum.  Some of the images are very novel and could be be world firsts.

Most people will know Paul.  A former BSoUP competitions secretary and current Chairman, he started underwater photography in 2009, formed his own photography business and has achieved modest success in national and international competitions, including category wins in Underwater Photographer of the Year and the British Wildlife Photography Awards.  He tries to make his images count in the conservation of our rivers, lakes and oceans by working with marine and freshwater conservation agencies.  His work has been widely published, including by the BBC.

Monthly Competition - Focus On - Sunlight

Definition:  An image where natural light, rather than strobe light, is a major feature of the photo. Use of some artificial fill light is still allowed.

The competition has been judged by Henley Spiers, who will present the top six along with his comments.

The current anonymous slide show comprising 26 images may be viewed by members.. You will be prompted to login if you haven’t already done so this session.

Henley SpiersFrom Tesco’s Whipping Boy to the Cover of DIVER

Henley will share his experience of going from the corporate world into life as a dive pro, followed by an infatuation with underwater photography which ultimately led to a transition into full-time underwater photographer and writer. Encompassing some of the key lessons and influences along the way, the talk will also feature a healthy dose of underwater imagery!

Henley is an underwater photographer, writer and dive instructor with an all-consuming passion for the sea. His images have been awarded in numerous competitions, including the Sony World Photography Awards, Asia Pacific UW Challenge and the Underwater Photographer of the Year contest.

Henley is a regular contributor to DIVER magazine and his images have appeared on 9 out of the last 21 covers.

Conservation plays an important part of his philosophy and he collaborates with the Marine Conservation Society, Mission Blue and the Devon and Cornwall Wildlife Trusts.

Half British and half French, he lives in Exeter with his fiancée (and favourite dive buddy) Jade and their daughter Apolline. Henley runs personalised underwater photography tours and workshops combining his love of diving, teaching and underwater photography. Henley shoots with a Nikon D850 in a Nauticam housing, with all the usual trimmings.

Live streaming

BSoUP members can view a live stream of the event. Details of how to access the monthly meetings are sent to members each month.
