Jack Jackson

Underwater adventurer Jack Jackson dies

19th February 2018

Jack Jackson, the underwater photographer and author of many best-selling diving books, has died at the age of 79. He had been seriously unwell since 2009.

Jacks’s funeral was in Woking in Surrey on 21st March. He leaves his wife Babs, with whom he shared many of his diving and other adventures.

Focus On - Black & White - Results

Congratulations to Bob Anthony who was the winner of this months Focus On - Black & White competition with an image of aJellyfish, taken in Jellyfish lake, Palau.

Second and third were Nicholas More and Mark Harris respectively. Nicholas' image was of a shark taken in Tawny Nurse Shark, Bimini, Bahamas. Mark's image was of an encrusted statue taken off the coast of Isla Mujeres Mexico, at the Museo Sub acuático de Arte - a portrait from the Silent Evolution installation.

A total of 31 entries were submitted and these were judged by Christian Llewellyn.

British Wildlife Photography Awards

The British Wildlife Photography Awards is open for entries.

Our World Underwater

The Our World Underwater international underwater photography and video competition has become known as the “Superbowl” of underwater imaging events. The competition celebrates and highlights both art of underwater photography as well as the beauty of the ocean.

This year the panel of judges went through thousands of images and videos taken by novice to professional photographers and videographers from around the world.

$55,000 in prizes were awarded to the winners. Congratulations to Shane Gross, who won Best of Show for his 1st place image from the Macro Traditional category.

Winners were announced live on stage during the Our World Underwater film festival in Chicago (February 17–18, 2018), and will be published by supporting media partners worldwide.

This will cover the process of judging competitions, choosing the right photographs and maximizing your potential.

Definition: Any image that is in shades of only black and white.

The competition is now closed.  There were a total of 37 entries and members only may view them via the following link.  You will be prompted to log in if you haven't already done so this session. 

The competition has been judged by Christian Llewellyn who will present the top six along with his comments.

Christian's talk will cover why wrecks are so fascinating, how to create amazing wreck photographs and the different techniques available in a wreck photographer's toolbox.

Christian, from Harrow, has a background that revolves around the media, working in TV and film and graphic design.  He started diving in the early 90s and is now a qualified Padi IDC Instructor specializing in teaching recreational wreck diving, film and photography. Since 2009 his articles and photographs have appeared in many worldwide diving magazines, online publications and advertisements, reflecting his passion for diving and underwater photography. Christian is also frequently asked to judge photographic competitions and is the founder of the Facebook Group - Wrecks of the World.

 The Great Northern Dive Show 17th – 18th February 2018

The Great Northern Dive Show is back in 2018 and it promises to be even bigger and better than the last two years.

Some of the biggest names in Scuba Diving have chosen to appear at The Great Northern Dive Show. These include divers from all areas and disciplines to provide talks and seminars on many different aspects of scuba diving, including underwater photography. Special guests will also be in attendance.

World Shootout 2017 - Results

The results of the World Shootout 2017 were announnced at Boot, Dusseldorf on 25th January 2018 and the awards presented.

Jeff Milisen from USA won the first prize of the Best 5 images - Dreamy dive vacation for 2 people worth $20,000 in Papua New Guinea. Wu Yung-Sen from Taiwan won the second prize,11-day diving safari in Cocos Islands. courtesy of the Undersea Hunter Group Tianhong Wang from China won the third  prize  Mares Instinct Regulator 12S and a Puck Pro Computer

Celebrate the Sea Festival

Ocean Geographic is pleased to announce the 13th Celebrate the Sea Festival in Manado, North Sulawesi from 31 March - 5 April 2018. Previously staged in association with the World Festival of Underwater Pictures (Le Festival Mondial de l'Image Sous-Marine – Marseille) from 2002 to 2013, Celebrate the Sea is regarded as one of the most significant underwater photographic events in the world outside Europe. The 2018 festival in Manado will take place in conjunction with the 5th annual ‘Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year’ competition.

The principal highlight of the 2018 festival is the international underwater shoot-out competition. With cash and holiday prize monies valued at around USD 50,000 spread across five categories and the 'Master of the Competition' award.
