Congratulations to Mark Drayton who was the winner of this year's Open Portfolio Competition.

Mark's images included Sweetlips on Liberty wreck, East Bali, Indonesia; Over/Under shot from the lagoon, Gubal Island, Northern Red Sea, Egypt; Sunburst, Fan and Fish, Amed Reef, East Bali, Indonesia; Skunk Anemone Fish on white balled anemone, Dumaguete, Negros Island, Phillipines; Peacock Mantis Shrimp with eggs, Lembeh, North Sulawesi, Indonesia; and Cleaner Shrimp. Seraya House Reef, Tulumban, East Bali, Indonesia.

Congratulations also to Taner Atilgan and Martyn Guess who came second and third respectively.

Taner's images included Coral & diver - La Paz, Mexico ; Playing sea lion puppy - La Paz, Mexico; Coral & diver - Maldives; Nurse shark reflection - Maldives; Goby - Bodrum, Turkey; and Manta reflection, Maldives.

Martyn's images included Peacock Mantis Shrimp with eggs - Bali; Great Hammerhead Shark, Bimini; Tiny Frogfish, Dauin Philippines; Honeycomb Moray and cleaner shrimp, Tulumben Bali; Fan coral and starfish, Ahmed, Bali; and Nudibranch, Tulumben Bali.

There were a total of 22 entries. These were judged by Rob Bailey.

Next month's Competition is Favourite shot of 2017. Definition: Your favourite shot taken in 2017 that has not already won a competition.The deadline is Sunday 7th January 2018. The competition will open shortly.

Please submit your jpeg images at 1400 pixels wide (landscape) or 1050 pixels tall(portrait) at 72ppi and at a size less than 1M. Please indicate what your subjects is, where it was taken and what camera system you used.

BSoUP December Meeting

The next BSoUP meeting takes place on Tuesday 19th December at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. in the Union bar which can be found on the ground floor of the Union Building but turn right at the walk through to the FiveSixEight bar where we normally buy drinks.  Union Building, Beit Quadrangle, Imperial College, South Kensington, London SW7 [Entrance via Prince Consort Road] (Directions).

New and prospective new members will be welcomed from 7.30 p.m. See Welcome.

A portfolio of 6 images. The competition is now closed. A total of 22 images were submitted and these were judged by long-serving and highly respected  BSoUP member Rob Bailey who will present the top six along with his comments.

New 2018 Calendar– Jeremy and Amanda Cuff

Photographers, photojournalists and BSOUP members Jeremy and Amanda Cuff have published a new 2018 Calendar titled “Diving Dreams” which is now available.

Jeremy said, “The Diving Dreams 2018 Calendar features a variety of images, mostly from our dive travels over recent times, and includes destinations such as Bali, Hawaii, Guadalupe, the Turks & Caicos Islands, the Maldives and the UK.”

Annual General Meeting 2017

The 2017 BSoUP AGM will take place at the BSoUP Meeting on 19 December 2017 at 7.30p.m. for 8.00 p.m., in the Union Bar, a different room to our normal meetings and to last year.  The Union Bar is on the ground floor of the Union Building, on your right through the main student bar as you enter through the main door (same as in 2015).

The prestigious DEEP Indonesia International Underwater Photo Competition is part of a unique series hosted by DivePhotoGuide & Wetpixel, in association with DEEP Indonesia, Indonesia’s first-ever diving, adventure travel and extreme sports expo.

Photographers will compete in six themed categories to win over $45,000 in prizes, including underwater photo equipment and premium dive travel packages to some of the top photo destinations in the world.


The DEEP Indonesia competition is part of a unique series that, together with the Our World Underwater competition, has a prize pool of over $100,000. The prestige of these contests means that winners also achieve the glory of being named some of the world’s best underwater photographers.

Our World Underwater 2018

The Our World Underwater (OWU) international underwater photography and video competition, now in its 13th year, has become one of the biggest and most-respected photography competitions in the world. The competition not only celebrates the beauty of the ocean, but the art of underwater photography as well.

The OWU competition is part of a unique series that, together with the DEEP Indonesia competition, has a prize pool of over $100,000. Winners also take pride in being named one of the world’s best underwater photographers, and their images will be exposed to millions of readers of dive, travel and photography magazines and websites worldwide.

Underwater photographers of all levels, from novice to professionals, will compete in what has become the “Super Bowl” of international underwater imagery events. Along with $55,000 in prizes comprising underwater photo gear and world-class dive trips, the Best of Show winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000!
