BSoUP Magazine - Latest issue

The latest issue of the BSoUP magazine 'in focus' has recently been published and copies sent to all members.

Issue 110 for Summer 2017 includes Editorial, Through Snell's WIndow - Nick More, A Passionate Guide to Wreck Photography by Christian Llewellyn, Focus on Competition Results, Getting back to Basics by Paul Duxfield, Mirrorless Coming of Age by Mario Vitalini, Wide Angle in Triton Bay by Georgette Douwma, Remembering Len Deeley at Selsey, Supper Jolly Memorial.

This issue was edited by Joss Woolf and produced with help from Chris, Mike and Paul.

Underwater Excellence - Results

Congratulations to Pedro Vieyra who was the winner of this year's Underater Excellence with a close-up of a blenny and wide-angle shots of a Cenote and Mobula rays in Mexico.

Congratulations also to Martyn Guess and Joe Daniels who came second and third respectively. Martin's portfolio comprise close-ups of a Mantis Shrimp with eggs and a Seahorse and a wide-angle image of a blue sharks. Joe's portfolio comprised a close-up of a Skeleton shrimp and wide-angle shots of blue shark and sweetlips.

There were a total of 14 portfolios entered and these were judged by Nick More.

Next month's Competition is the Best of British Portoflio Competition. The competition will open shortly. The deadline is Sunday 8th October 2017.

Please submit your 3 jpeg images at 1400 pixels wide (landscape) or 1050 pixels tall(portrait) at 72ppi and at a size less than 1M. Please indicate what your subjects is, where it was taken and what camera system you used.

September BSoUP Meeting

The next BSoUP meeting takes place this month on Tuesday 19th September at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. in Meeting Room 3, Union Building, Beit Quadrangle, Imperial College, South Kensington, London SW7. Entrance via Prince Consort Road (Directions). New and prospective new members will be welcomed from 7.30 p.m. See Welcome.

Live Streaming of the meeting

We hope to go live at this meeting with a new video streaming capability.  Members who cannot attend - up to a maximum of 50 - will be able to log on and listen to the presentations live whilst getting a direct high quality feed of the presentation slides.  

For those that cannot listen in live, you will be able to access a recording afterwards from an archive.  We are putting the final touches to a contract right now and the Chairman will follow up with another bulletin before the meeting to provide instructions for logging in to the meeting.

David Harasti - Threatened Species and Marine Protected Areas in Australia

Dr David Harasti is a Senior Research Marine Scientist working for Fisheries NSW in Australia with over fifteen years experience working on threatened marine species and Marine Protected Areas. His presentation will focus on using video technology for monitoring fish diversity and abundance in MPAs, tagging and tracking of great white sharks and marine turtles and provide an insight into his PhD research on seahorses, particularly the effects of the use of flash photography.

Underwater Excellence
Competition:  Underwater Excellence

Competition:  Underwater Excellence

Definition: A portfolio of 3 separate images with at least one wide angle and one macro/close up image. Images can be from different locations around the world or from one place, but they do not have to work together as a unified portfolio. Images should demonstrate a range of techniques with technical and artistic excellence in each individual image.
The competition is now closed.  There were 13 entries and these have been judged by Nick More who will present the top six with his comments at the meeting. The entries can be viewed by clicking on the following link: Underwater Excellence. You will be prompted to log in if you have not already done so this session.

Nick lives in Leicestershire where he works as a Dentist.  He has been diving since 1993 after a try dive in Key West. He qualified in 1998 in the Maldives and is now a Padi DM with well over 1500 dives.  His photographic achievements include several Focus-On wins and numerous placings.  He was Overseas winner (public vote) in the BSoUP/Diver Print competition in 2013.  He was highly commended in the same competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and was overall winner in 2016.  He was also awarded a Silver medal in 'Our world Underwater' competion 2017 - in the unrestricted macro section.

BSoUP / DIVER Annual Print Competition 2017

Deadline: Tuesday 19th September

Once again we have again teamed up with DIVER Magazine to stage this major competition at the DIVE SHOW at the NEC, Birmingham over the weekend of 21-22nd October 2016. A total of 80 of the best prints will be displayed at the show and all categories judged by visitors. A panel of judges will choose the overall winner of the grand prize.

There are four categories in the Print Competition: British and Irish, Overseas, Advanced British and Irish, and Advanced Overseas. Further details.

This year's awards are open for entries with new categories and themes. The judging panel welcomes back award winning photographer, Eamonn McCabe, Travel Editor of Vanity Fair, Michelle Jana Chan, and our first Asian-based.

Last year's winners can be seen in the 2016 winners' gallery and the Travel Photographer of the Year 2016 is Portuguese photographer, Joel Santos. The Young Travel Photographer of the Year is 14 year old Darpan Basak from India.

Photographers from 20 countries featured amongst the winners and the already high standard of entries rose further that year.

San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition

This is a Call for Entry” for the 2017 San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition (SDUFEX) that will take place Friday and Saturday evenings, October 6th and 7th, 2017 at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall in San Diego, California.

This is your opportunity to see your work projected in a High Definition format in a state of the art venue on a 30’ screen.  An independent panel of distinguished judges will select the approximately 30 films to be shown during the two-night event.  There is no entry fee!   Filmmakers whose films are selected are encouraged to come to the show and introduce their film(s) in person on the night of the exhibition.
