Website of the Week - Linda Pitkin

From early childhood, Linda's interest in the natural world drew her to a career as a biologist, specializing until 2006 in research on insects at The Natural History Museum in London (see Scientific Publications). But for decades her passion for nature has led her also to photograph marine life. She approaches this with a biologist's fascination for living organisms, but even more with a photographer's eye for composition and lighting.

Linda started in scuba diving in 1979 and took up underwater photography a year later, in 1980, joining the British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP). Diving usually with Brian, her husband, she has travelled to many parts of the world in search of a wide range of underwater subjects, from immense whale sharks to tiny shrimps, and scenic views of reefs and wrecks.

Linda is the author and photographer of four books, and a number of articles. Her stock photography features widely in books, newspapers, magazines and journals, including Professional Photographer, BBC Wildlife, Nature, and leading diving magazines. Other uses of her photographs include calendars, brochures, cards, advertising, and in an IMAX multi-screen presentation. Linda also undertakes commissioned photography.

She serves on juries for photography competitions, and has been a jury member for BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts), for the 2002 Television Craft Awards.

Website of the Week - Greg Piper

"I have always been an artist. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, I grew up drawing, my first paid art jobs were painting Jean Jackets through the 80’s! I have always had a love for photography and did it as a hobby since I could afford my first camera."

"In 2008 while in Cancun I did my first dive, now almost eight years later I am well over 1000 and counting. I fell in love with the underwater world. My travels and passion for the sport fueled by the art of photography has carried me off to the far reaches of our planet."

Damien Mauric grew up on the shores of the Mediterranean with his fins, mask and snorkel in hand and fell in love with the sea at a very young age.  His passion for the sea could be called a family legacy. Born in the South of France into a family with tight links to the ocean, his grandfather was a naval architect who cooperated with Jaqcues-Yves Cousteau and designed Cousteau’s boat, The Alcyone, and his godfather was a diver and underwater geologist.

However, breathing underwater came much later, in his early 20s, when he became a certified diving instructor and gave lessons at a diving school in Spain. It was then too, that he became interested in underwater photography.

For the past 15 years Damien has dived extensively and yet one of his favourite places is the Mediterranean Sea. Damien hopes that by sharing his images he can help raise awareness for protecting the oceans. His motto is simple but important, “Protect the Oceans”.
Damien's first talk will be about Fiji where he was sent on an assignment to cover a luxury liveaboard but his photography trip turned from heaven to hell.

Damien's second talk will focus on an Alex Mustard underwater photography workshop...... without Alex Mustard. How to make the best of every photographic opportunity in a place such as the Galapagos.

"As a child I was obsessed with sharks. I would enthusiastically read any book on the subject and watch documentaries about the ocean over and over again. Living in England, visits to the coast were rare and as I grew older, and started my own business, swimming with sharks seemed like a distant dream. It wasn't until I decide to finally learn to scuba dive while on holiday in 2007 that I realised how much I had been missing.

I was instantly addicted to visiting the underwater world and set about making plans to fulfil my lifelong ambition, to dive with Great White sharks! After purchasing a small underwater camera I set off to South Australia for a five day expedition with the legendary Rodney Fox"
