Wildlife Photographer of the Year

The winners of the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year have been announced.

In the Underwater category the winner was Michael Aw with an inage of a whale.

"An imposing Bryde’s whale rips through a mass of sardines, gulping hundreds in a single pass. Photographing this feeding frenzy was a real challenge for Michael. Already knocked clean out of the water by whales on two occasions, he just managed to stay out of the way during this encounter. This scene happened during the annual sardine run, when billions of sardines migrate along South Africa’s Wild Coast, attracting predators such as gannets, dolphins and sharks along the way".

Ellen Cuylaerts: Belugas in the Wild. Beluga whales gather in Hudson Bay every summer to give birth, molt and feed on capelin, before they head back to colder Arctic waters. In July Ellen travelled to Churchill, Hudson Bay for the second year running; in 2014 adverse conditions meant she came home without a single underwater image of a beluga whale! She will talk about the logistics and the choices made to make the most of this trip under all circumstances and share her amazing images with us.

Ellen Cuylaerts
Ellen Cuylaerts
Ellen is from Belgium (currently living in Grand Cayman). She only started diving and taking a camera under water in the summer of 2011, followed by workshops with Alex Mustard in 2012 and in 2013. Since 2012 her in water activities have moved from diving to snorkelling due to health issues. Her main focus is photography of bigger animals in the snorkel zone using a Nikon D800 with 16mm fisheye lens. She travels the world with her family and focusses on awareness and education as a freelance wildlife and underwater photographer. 2015 was ‘the year of the cold’ as the first trips to document Arctic life were made. More of that will follow in the future!

Best of British Portfolio
Best of British Portfolio

In the BSoUP Diver Print Competition she won the grand prize in 2013 and the Advanced Overseas category in 2014, and won the 2013 competition.  She also came 1st in two categories in the 2015 United Nations World Ocean Day competition (2014 had a 1st and a 2nd).

Best of British Portfolio (A portfolio of 3 images taken in British waters that showcase a photographer's style or method of work and the beauty of our local underwater environment.  The portfolio can have subjects with a single theme, but each will be judged on its own merits, so the images do not have to work together visually.) The competition is now closed. BSoUP Members may view the 16 entries in the Competition Slideshow.  You will be asked to log in if you have not done so this session. The competition has been judged by Joe Daniels.  At the meeting all of the entries will be shown and Joe will present his winners with some feedback about how he chose them.

Joe Daniels: The Photographic Diversity of Ambon.  Any serious critter diver or macro photographer will be aware of the abundance of opportunity for macro photography around Ambon Bay's mucky slopes. But Joe will be taking you through some of the lesser known photographic opportunities that Ambon has to offer – it’s not just macro! He has just returned after spending two years on the island with his partner Emily managing Maluku Divers Resort. During that time he explored Ambon's photographic diversity extensively and will present what he captured.
Joe's underwater photography has developed through his love for the marine world which began from a very young age. In 2007 he volunteered on a marine conservation project in the Seychelles and then spent over 2 years in New Zealand and Australia, including a year working with Manta Rays and Whale Sharks on Ningaloo Reef off Western Australia.
Joe Daniels
Joe Daniels

He returned to the Seychelles for 3 months as a volunteer on the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles (MCSS) Whale Shark Monitoring Project and after completing his dive instructor course in South Africa returned to the Seychelles as Dive Officer for Global Vision International, a marine conservation NGO.

In the clear waters of Australia and the Seychelles free diving was his preferred method, shooting many of his wide angle images with little other than a mask and fins.  With a move to Ambon in 2013 and a focus more on macro subjects,  he utilised his scuba diving skills in order to spend more time with each subject.  Joe continues to find inspiration in the ocean and hopes that his images can bring awareness to the fragility and diversity of the underwater environment. He took gold in the traditional macro category of the 2015 Our World Underwater Competition and in 2014 won BSoUP’s Underwater Excellence competition, was commended in the  Outdoor Photographer of the Year and was a finalist in the HIPA Life In Colour competition.

"I qualified as a scuba diver in 1996 in the UK. Back in 2007, I started taking video footage using a Sony PD150 (in an amphibico housing). You can see some of the videos I created by clicking this link.

Although I swore I never would turn to stills photography, I was pleasantly surprised with the results from my first attempt. That was with a Canon DSLR camera in an Ikelite housing. During a trip to Indonesia with Martin Edge, I felt my photography really coming alive and I acheived 3rd place in the BSoUP beginners portfolio competition."

"I now shoot with a Nikon D300s in a Subal housing. I've not looked back since then and I'm really pleased with the images I have. I hope you like them too!

Whilst exhibiting at the Birmingham NEC dive show, I was approached by Coral Cay Conservation and asked to visit two of their sites - in Cambodia and The Philippines. The intention was to capture some of the fun, atmosphere and valuable work done by the charity in the hopes it would encourage others to volunteer or contribute to the effort.

You can see a very small selection of the 3000 odd photographs that I took during my stay on this website.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about my site and the images. If you'd like to know any more, please feel free to get in touch at"
