U/W Photography Guide Launched

UWPhotographyGuide.com launches the world’s first free comprehensive online guide to underwater photography.

Underwater photography is a growing activity enjoyed by tens of thousands of scuba divers each year. UWPhotographyGuide.com is a comprehensive resource on underwater photography theory, technique, equipment, travel destinations and marine life for beginners and experienced photographers.

January 27th, 2010 – Underwater photography is the most challenging type of photography one can undertake. It is also one of the fastest growing segments, due to the rapid drop in the price of underwater camera housings over the last 10 years. UWPhotographyGuide.com is proud to be the first free comprehensive online guide to underwater photography to assist divers and photographers in learning this difficult art.

DPG Online Comprehensive Underwater Photography Tutorials

In response to the global demand from photographers, scuba divers, surfers and snorkelers around the world, leading underwater photography website DivePhotoGuide.com has launched a highly anticipated free series of comprehensive underwater photography tutorials and guides to help the world learn underwater photography. Never before has there been such a growing interest in underwater photography. Affordable digital cameras have made underwater photography more accessible, and social media has made it easier than ever to share photos with your friends, family and the world.

The underwater photography guides offer easy-to-read tutorials for photographers all levels to learn how to take great underwater photos.

The tutorials are written by professional underwater photographer Jason Heller and DivePhotoGuide.com editor Matt Weiss, along with contributions from several world renowned professional and award winning underwater photographers, such as National Geographic photographer David Doubilet and BSoUP Members Martin Edge, and Alex Mustard. Each tutorial includes beautiful underwater photos and equipment set-up shots that illustrate each technique.

Exposure

The Underwater Channel would like you to know that from lst February, 2010 the Channel will be off air temporarily.

Why? This is because we are in the process of restructuring The Underwater Channel. Nicholas Claxton, UWC's founder and MD, has reached agreement to re-acquire The Underwater Channel from our investors, Babel Networks, following their decision to make widespread cuts in their overall operations. The re-acquiring of the Channel includes our ability to offer 300+ hours of original videos produced by our Faces of Splash, our special contributors as well as licensed videos from many of the leading filmmakers of the underwater world.

What does this mean for the future of The Underwater Channel? This is good news and we're excited to be taking back the reins. We've had an amazing journey since we set up the Channel nearly two years ago. In restructuring the business we will benefit enormously from this experience as well as the extensive connections we've made and most importantly the loyal and valued following that we've established in the remarkable underwater community.

Where can you view our videos?  Our videos can still be viewed at PADI at: www.padi.com/scuba/video

January BSoUP Meeting

The next BSoUP meeting takes place on Wednesday, 20th January 2010 at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. at our usual venue the Holland Club, Imperial College, S. Kensington, London. Directions.

Photo techniques: Blasts from the past

Last year members learned of the impressive technical background provided by the Society's Wise Old Men. This year BSoUP co-founder Colin Doeg, who has always claimed his lack of a formal background in photography has been an asset, will speak of his own immersion into taking pictures underwater and the continued relevance of some of his experience to today's digital world. A former British Underwater Photographer of the Year, he took the first photograph in British waters ever to win an open underwater competition.

Focus on: 2009 Images

January's Focus on Competition is for any image taken in 2009 which has not previously won or been placed in a national or international competition.

Please read the Rules before entering your images via the online Competitions entry form.

Deadline: Tuesday 19th January at 10.00 p.m.

Main event: A Complete Guide to Wreck Photography by Charlie Hood

A different look at the way we take images of wrecks.

Rather than just bits of twisted metal, wrecks can be quite beautiful, and not only because of the marine life they can hold. Wrecks have spirit, they have history, moods and photographed in the right way are simply awe inspiring.

Forget using any other lens than a full frame fisheye, this talk is aimed at trying to show wrecks, 'as a child would imagine them' rather than close-ups of a scrap heap.

Charles Hood

BSoUP Member Charles Hood started taking pix in the mid 70s when he lived in the Middle East mainly using a Kodak Instamatic in a homemade housing. Then after learning to dive with University of London he hired Nikons IIs from Pelling & Cross for various dive trips. Finally he bought his first underwater system, the Nikonos III and Oceanic 2000 flash, when he worked at Ocean Optics in 1982.

"I spent the best part of 7 years returning from dives with maybe one or two good images per roll until the Nikon F801 arrived and Subal housing, which he imported into UK (pre-Optics dealership), became available. Life became a whole lot easier then and his hit rate dramatically improved seeing him dabble in selling articles to magazines and being taken on at Bruce Coleman stock library."

After being made redundant in 2000, Charlie started to work for DIVE magazine and also as a freelance photojournalist and has now racked up nearly 100 front covers and over 900 published articles. Today he uses a Nikon D3 in an Aquatica housing with twin Sea & Sea YS110 strobes. To learn more about Charlie and see some of his hundreds of images please visit www.charleshood.com/
