Website of the Week - Jon Martin

Each week we are highlighting a BSoUP Member's website. This week's choice is Marina-Life.co.uk, edited by Jon Martin.

He'd always been fascinated by the television documentaries of Jacques Cousteau in the '70s but it wasn't until he snorkelled for the first time on the Greek island of Rhodes in 1994 that he realised that interacting with marine creatures in their own habitats was a real possibilty.

However, it wasn't until 1999 that he actually did an introductory Open Water Scuba Diver course from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

Jon's life changed from this point, as he's tried to dive wherever and whenever the time allowed (which wasn't easy when trying to run his own business).

Since his first tentative breaths in the Sovereign Centre's swimming pool, he's gone on to log over 100 dives, in a variety of exotic locations, including St Lucia, Antigua, Florida, Bahamas, the Red Sea, as well as Australia's Great Barrier Reef. He's also dived in some seemingly non-exotic, but equally fascinating places, such as various locations around the UK, including Soverign Harbour's North Marina.

Last year Jon created the DVD 'Geeting started with Underwater Photography'.

Next BSoUP Meeting

The next BSoUP meeting takes place on Wednesday, September 15th at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. at our usual venue the Holland Club, Imperial College, S. Kensington, London. Directions. New and prospective new members will be welcomed from 7.30 p.m.

Main Event (1): Photographing the mantas of Hanifaru lagoon in Maldives. Group presentation led by Alex Mustard.

A couple of weeks ago, Alex led a trip to this red hot destination and since most of the group are BSoUP members, and everyone got excellent manta images, we thought it would be fun to do a report with images almost direct from the field.

Hanifaru and the surrounding Baa Atoll is one of the most in vogue destinations in underwater photography, this talk shares our experience and aims to tell you what to expect from the mantas, the best way to approach it photographically and that there is more to the area than loads of the big flappy things.

Underwater Excellence: BSoUP Members only. Win £250 courtesy of DiveQuest. for your portfolio of 3 great images. Please read the Rules before entering via the online Entry Form. Deadline: Thursday 9th September 2010.

Main Event (2): Better photos through technology by Alex Mustard

One of the great traditions of BSoUP is building our own gear for underwater photography. But what do you do if you are full of ideas for shots, but have the engineering skill of a jellyfish?

This talk is more Blue Peter than Blue Planet. Alex Mustard will describe how through a combination of his own bodging and at times the engineering skills of others he's cobbled together various home-made accessories for his underwater photography. Mostly on the very cheap.

An Unforgettable Evening with David Doubilet, Michael AW and Leandro Blanco.

Monday 25 October 2010 at 7.00 for 7.15 p.m.

Huxley Theatre, Zoological Society of London, London Zoo.

On Monday 25 October 2010, at the prestigious home of the Zoological Society of London, London Zoo, a conservation zoo since 1826, we are honoured to present David Doubilet and friends at  'An Unforgettable Evening' organised by Ocean Geographic Society and the British Society of Underwater Photographers.

David Doubilet stands out in the world of underwater photography as a unique and exceptional artist. Long before underwater photography became as accessible as it is today, some innate calling inspired David, born in New York in 1946, to put a Brownie camera into a plastic bag and take it below the cold, green waters of the New Jersey coastline at just 12 years old.

Now, after decades of inspirational image-making around the globe, David is still at the top of his profession having created, among many other achievements, more than 60 stories for National Geographic magazine.
