North Sea Film Festival - Studio/K in Amsterdam

November 19 - 21

We are proud to announce that the fourth edition of the North Sea Film Festival, the only underwater
film festival in the Netherlands - will take place from November 19 till November 21 at Studio/K in
Amsterdam.

We are staying in Amsterdam, because we liked it! This festival location, with its comfortable cinema
chairs, restaurant, well stocked bar and huge foyer will guarantee a great festival ambiance. The philosophy won't change: we will still be screening high quality films on surprising topics, (this time also in full HD for qualifying films) organise workshops and an information market.

This year we have included a third category: the AC, Amateur Category for all film makers who are not able to spend the whole year under water. These talented filmmakers are invited to send us their short films with a maximum length of 6 minutes for the festival selection. Our own visits to festivals abroad secured already some beautiful productions!

We continue to focus and display other artforms, we are still working on it! The festival organisation will again invite as many filmmakers as possible, which are requested to take part in the Q&A sessions after the screening of the movies.

If you want to submit film yourself, you find all information at the festival site www.northseafilmfestival.com

Website of the Week - Kitty Jempson

Each week we are highlighting a BSoUP Member's website. This weeks choice is Undersea Images the website of Kitty Jempson.

Kitty was born in Hastings in 1978 and started diving in 1997.  She did an Art Foundation course in Manchester soon after learning to dive and has always been a passionate amateur photographer.  It took Kitty about 5 years of research (and savings) to buy her first camera housing - this was a Subal housing for a Nikon F801s.  Kitty absolutely loved it from the word go.  It was a steep learning curve though - with diving limited to only one, perhaps two holidays a year, and no results until she got home.

In 2005 Kitty finally went digital and bought a Nikon D200 and Hugyfot housing.  After a few problems with this housing she gave in and bought the housing she'd always really wanted, another Subal.  She still has a lot to learn and crave more time underwater with her camera!

To learn more about Kitty and see some of her images, please visit www.underseaimages.co.uk/Site/Home.html

Charles Erb chosen as best British underwater photographer

Charles Erb won the British Splash-In Championship, an underwater photography competition held in Plymouth waters on Saturday 3 July. Organised by the British Society of Underwater Photographers, this annual event has been running for over 30 years and was held at Hotel Mount Batten.

47 competitors registered from all around Britain, hoping that the glorious weather of the past day would hold. The early hours of Saturday were very promising with flat calm water and great sunshine with surface conditions among the best that the competitors had seen in years.

A number of dedicated photographers arrived a few days early to find the ultimate dive site. 116 images were ultimately submitted in four categories. They were projected at Hotel Mount Batten for the audience to select their favourite shots in each category.

Bristol-based Julie Kaye took the close-up category with a shot of several Shannies lined-up and last year's winner Cathy Lewis came first in the animal portrait category with a Painted Goby. Martin Davies won the wide-angle category with his shot of a diver on the James Eagan Layne wreck with a scooter.

Charles Erb won a liveaboard trip to the Maldives, courtesy of Maldives Scuba Tours after his image was chosen by judges as the best overall picture. This year's panel of judges consisted of AP Valves' Martin Parker, Sport Diver Editor Mark Evans and Award winning photojournalist Gavin Parsons.

Finally, Derek Haslam captured the humorous category with a shot of people peeking through the water, thus winning a stabilising jacket kindly donated by AP Valves.

Said JP Trenque, chairman of BSoUP: "We were honoured to see former competitor Martin Parker on the panel of judges this year. AP Valves has been a long standing sponsor of the humorous category and Martin himself used to take this category very seriously!".

See Full Results.

Next year's championship will take place in Plymouth on 9 July 2011.

CIWEM's Environmental Photographer of the Year

Deadline: 5pm on 31st July, 2010

Entries are now being accepted

CIWEM's Environmental Photographer of the Year is an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography, honouring amateur and professional photographers who use their ability to raise awareness of environmental and social issues. With 2,500 entries received from 61 countries in 2009, EPOTY is now one of the fastest growing photographic competitions in the world.

This year CIWEM have introduced a new category 'The Underwater World'.

EPOTY encourages images of places and people that are benefitting from a changing climate, or vulnerable ecosystems and communities that are struggling with the effects.

Images examine the relationship between economic development, environmental degradation and social inequity, celebrate innovations helping us achieve environmental improvements, examine lifestyles, cultural traditions, spiritual activities and racial prejudices, and celebrate the incredible variety and beauty that exists within our natural environment. They serve to remind us what we need to protect.
