Layang Layang Underwater Photo Shootout 2008
After six days of friendly competition among 34 competitors from 10 countries, a panel of three internationally acclaimed underwater photographers (Settimio Ciprianni, Stephen Wong and Rod Klein) selected winning images from entries submitted by contest participants.
Each of the participating divers undertook the challenge of creating beautiful and creative images during their dives around Layang Layang, with contest rules permitting everyone to submit up to three images in each of two categories andmdash; macro and wide-angle. |

Congratulations to Brits Adam Butler who came first in the Macro category with an image of a fish in a barrell sponge (above) and to Louisa Butler who came fourth overall with an image of a coral trout (left). Between them they won trips to Truk Lagoon, Layang Layang, Similan and Surin Is. and Sipadan and Mabul and other prizes

NUPG Splash-in
The 8th NUPG Summer splash-in was held in North Wales on Saturday 26th July. For once this summer we were blessed with good weather - a warm day and virtually cloudless sky.
Participants were able to dive anywhere in N. Wales, meeting at Treaddur Bay at 18.00hrs on Friday to hand in their entries - one splash-in compettitioni and two print categories - UK and Overseas. |
The early risers dived Menai Bridge at 08.30hrs before moving down the coast to Trefor Pier for the rest of the day.
Visibility at Menai was little more than a metre so most entries were from Trefor - where the viz was over 5m!!

The Wildlife Trusts report on Splash-in
At the recent British Splash-in Championship, organised by BSoUP in association with the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, The Wildlife Trusts set the brief for a special print category: "I can't believe it's the UK!" and asked underwater photographers to submit their shots of colourful and exotic-looking marine wildlife captured around our shores to be used for publicity purposes over the next year.

Judges from The Wildlife Trusts picked out the worthy winners, with three striking photographs shedding new light on the fascinating world beneath the waves.
Congratulations to Sally Sharrock who won the category with an image of a Corkwing wrasse (right), Dave Peake, who came second with an image of spider crabs aggregating, and Arthur Kingdon, who came third with an image of a seal.

Wavescapes Surf Film festival 2008 |
Shark Angels Premieres in South Africa
The highly anticipated short documentary, aiming to shift the public's view of sharks and focus much needed attention on their conservation, will premiere in Durban, South Africa at the Wavescapes/IFC Film Festival on July 31st. Julie Andersen, a Founder and Director of Shark Savers, and one of the three Shark Angels will be in attendance to host a discussion about their mission after the screening.
Join three exceptional young women - Julie Andersen, founder of Shark Savers, Alison Kock, marine biologist for Save our Seas, and Kim McCoy, Executive Director of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - on an adventure of a lifetime to experience, celebrate and protect what are often considered the most dangerous animals on the planet: sharks.

St Abbs and Eyemouth Volunrary Marine Reserve |
St Abbs Splash-in
Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August 2008
Underwater photographers are invited to join this year's Splash-in, held at the St Abbs and Eyemouth voluntary marine reserve. For the first time, the competition is going completely digital, though it will retain the usual categories: marine life portrait, atmospheric and humour.
Held on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August, judging will be carried out by the audience at a slideshow on the Sunday night. Any divers interested in taking part should check the voluntary marine reserve website at www.marine-reserve.co.uk. |

British Splash-in Championship in the News
The Western Morning News published an article by Peter Harrsion today (Friday 18th July) about last weekend's British Splash-in Championship.
Award winners Helen Wehner, Charles Erb and Cathy Lewis and Splash-in Co-ordinator Martha Tressler were interviewed for the article.

Focus on - July 2008 - Green Waters
Congratulations to Pedro Vieyra whose image of a sealion won this month's Focus on - Green Waters Member's competition.
A total of 28 images were submitted.
Pedro's image was taken in the Sea of Cortez at the Southern end of the Baha Peninsula in late January which is the breeding season for this colony of several hundred sealions. His D200 with 10 to 17mm lens towards the 17 end, and a 'magic filter' was on shutter priority at 1/160th and continuous fire. This bull amused himself by charging at his dome port repeatedly, giving him a great chance for this type of shot.

Anthony Holley came second and fourth with an image of Red Irish Lord and an image of two seals playing at the surface and Alex Mustard came third with an image of a Weedy seadragon.

British Splash-in Championship - Print Winners
The winning prints from this year's British Splash-in Championship have now been posted on this website. See Prints.
Congratulations to Robert Cuss whose image of a pike in reeds taken in Guildenburgh Water, Peterborough (left) was judged by an independant panel as the winner of the Grand prize.
Robert won a Red Sea Eco Village diving holiday donated by Oonasdivers and 'Wyland: Visions of the Sea' donated by the National Marine Aquarium.

DIVER Photographer of the Year Competition
DIVER magazine is looking for a "Photographer of the Year" who will represent the magazine and the UK and Ireland at this year's SanDisk Red Sea International Underwater Photography Competition in Eilat, Israel from 10-15 November.
Both amateur and professional underwater photographers are invited to enter online heats at Divernet.com, with the chance of winning a free trip to Eilat and entry to the annual competition, known for the high value of its prizes.
Similar national competitions are taking place all around the world, with their winners also feeding into the Eilat competition.
You can submit up to three digital or scanned underwater photos to Divernet per month, starting from 1 May and running through to the end of August.
The winning photographer will be flown to Israel to participate in the SanDisk Shoot-out and in a special Media category. Full details. |

British Splash-in Championship July 2008
The British Splash-in Championship took place at the Mount Batten Centre and National Aquarium, Plymouth, Devon on Saturday 12th July.
A total of 49 members and guests participated and 46 of these returned images for judging.
Congratulations to Helen Wehner whose image of a Scorpion fish won the 'Animal Portrait' category and was the judges choice to win a one week liveaboard trip to the Red Sea kindly donated by Tony
Backhurst Scuba.
Congratulations also to Charles Erb whose image of a Spider crab won the 'Wide-angle' category. Charles was presented with the Alan James Digital Image Trophy and an Olympus Mju 1030 digital camera donated by Olympus UK.
Congratulations also to Cathy Lewis whose image of two Tompot blennies won the 'Close-up' category. Cathy was presemted with the Sport Diver Trophy and an Olympus Mju 1030 digital camera donated by Olympus UK.

Steve Jones's images used on 'MV Norwegian Gem'
BSoUP member Steve Jones's images have been used to decorate the cruise liner "MV Norwegian Gem" (http://www.ncl.com/). The images have been blown up to nearly 4 metres by around 2.5 metres and printed on aluminium panels coated in varnish. 9 images are on display one on each level of the forward stair hall of the ship.
The exhibition will run until the ship is refurbished in 10 years time. The fleet of Norwegian Cruise Lines has used photographers from different genres to decorate each of their ships. Steve Bloom's wildlife images decorated the 'MV Norwegian Pearl' and images from Ernst Haas's estate were used on the 'Norwegian Jewel'. Martin Davies - 'Best Submarine image' |
Photographic Success for Martin Davies
Southsea Subaqua Club Diving Officer Martin Davies who is also a BSoUP Committee Member has scooped the 'Best Submarine image' award at the Fotosub Gran Canaria Costa Mogandaán international photographic competition.
Martin
was selected by BSoUP to
represent Britain for the third time in this annual competition. World
class photographers from the Canary Islands, Spain, Germany, France and
Italy took part in the competition which is held over 2 days and aims to
produce high quality images which are then judged by a panel of experts.
Martin came 10th overall in the competition. |

Unlike previous events when we have had a BBQ, this year, due to a clash with another event at the National Aquarium, we are offering a buffet instead.
The buffet costs just £9.00 and includes a vegetarian option.
If you would like to partake of the buffet please register by one of the following methods:

It would be helpful if you are registering for the buffet and also competing in the Splash-in if you would also register for the event at the same time, although entries will be accepted at the Mount Batten Centre in the bar between 8.30 -10.00 pm on Friday 11 July. If you cannot arrive on Friday night and wish to register for the Splash-in on Saturday 12 July in the morning this can be arranged, but must be specially requested (contact martha@mtressler.com).
