Epson, leading manufacturers of printers and imaging products, will be sponsoring the next "Red Sea 2008 underwater photography competition", held in Eilat , Israel. Valued prizes for this year are over 80,000$
.
First prize alone has a value of 25,000$, 10,000$ check, courtesy of Epson, and 3 weeks diving safari for two to Papua new Guinea .

Images of the world

As a preview for the Eilat shoot out, 11 preliminary online competitions were held in 11 countries worldwide. Winners of the online competition are invited to participate at the Epson Red Sea event, courtesy of the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.

Winners will also participate in a special category: "winning and donating" (prize of 5,000$), a donation for a special shark preservation project.

"As an environmentally aware company, who would like to take part in the community life, It was very much easy for us to "get in touch" with the Red Sea event", says Oren Fleisher from Epson. "Taking in mind the colorful scenery, the action sport and the joy of viewing the photos - the link to Epson almost seems natural". This year Epson Red sea event will be divided into two main categories: "Images of the world" which you can stay home and send in your competition images that were shot any time anywhere in the world. Wild Wonders of Europe - Mission Merou

BSoUP member Linda Pitkin has recently returned from her first Wild Wonders of Europe mission to photograph Dusky Grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) and other underwater wildlife in the Lavezzi Islands, Corsica.

Linda spent a week on the live-aboard 'Galiote' based at the uninhabited Lavezzi Islands which lie between Corsica and Sardinia.

Her blog of the trip has just been posted on the Wild Wonders of Europe website at www.wild-wonders.com/blog/.

Alex Mustard reviews the Nikon D3 and Subal ND3 housing

On his recent trips across the pond to British Columbia and Guadalupe BSoUP member Alex Mustard was loaned a Nikon D3 and a Subal ND3.

Alex reviews the combination and concludes that the D3 takes excellent macro and wide angle underwater photos.

Alex said 'I love the D3's screen (also on the D700 and D300).  I miss the Tokina! I also miss the D3, now it is returned. FX is great and easy to adapt to. However, the advantages of FX in Nikon's current range really depend on what you like to photograph and where. Of course, buying a D3 might just change what you like to photograph! Its capabilities in low light will change your approach to photography in these conditions. This makes it a very exciting underwater camera.'

BSoUP's Chairman recovers Charlie Brown's WWII medals from Thames

WWII veteran Charlie Brown was taking part in a cruise organised by the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships when his WWII medals fell out of his pocket into the murky waters of the Thames whilst he was being transfered to the cruise vessel at Teddington over a week ago.

BSoUP's Chairman JP Trenque, who is also a volunteer member of the Teddington Lifeboat Crew, dived in the river last Saturday to try and find the lost medals. And guess what, he succeeded!

Charlie was delighted to be re-united with his medals.
