British Splash-in Championship 2008 - Judges

This year's event takes place on 12 July 2008 at The Mount Batten Centre and the National Aquarium, Plymouth, Devon.

SPLASH-IN PANEL

We are delighted to announce that our Splash-in panel includes Alan James, Paul Cox and Neil Hope.

Alan James, an award-winning photographer, has often scooped the top prizes at British Splash-In Championships. During an emotional farewell speech at BSoUP a few months ago, Alan told the audience that he and his wife Heather were now stepping back from underwater photography and scuba-diving, although they will still plan to do the odd dive. This year's competitors will therefore be privileged to have Alan on the panel of judges for what could be one of his last public appearances with BSoUP.

Paul Cox is Head of Science and Learning at the National Marine Aquarium.  He came into Marine Biology as a career through overseas SCUBA experiences and, having moved to Plymouth to study, discovered the wonders of diving in the South West.

Paul has been working for the Aquarium for the past 5 years and, during that time, has met and worked with many underwater and terrestrial photographers.

He bought his first digital SLR before a trip to the Arctic four years ago and has been trying to use it ever since.  It has not yet made it underwater!

Neil Hope is Deputy Picture Editor of the Western Morning News, Plymouth, and a regular contributer to diving publications.
Since qualifying in 1989 in the North-East of England, Neil has lived and dived extensively throughout the UK eventually settling in Torpoint, Cornwall some five years ago.
Well aware of the challenging conditions which the underwater photographer often faces along our shores he is looking forward to seeing the on-the-day results of the competition.

Its not too late to participate in this year's Splash-in. For further details - see Splash-in

If you want to partake in the buffet, than please register by Wednesday 2nd July.

The Prints competiton is now closed and the entries are on display at the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth, Devon until midnight Saturday 12 July 2008.

Photographers, photojournalists and BSOUP members Jeremy and Amanda Cuff have published a new feature about Hawaii's Kona Coast which describes in words and images the experiences of diving this unique coastline on a Martin Edge trip.

Jeremy said, "We had a really good time diving Hawaii's Kona Coast, and we've enjoyed putting together this feature as a comprehensive overview of the trip. There's really nothing better than the incredible manta ray night dive.

MadAboutUs Photo Competition Winners, Philippines

MadAboutUs Photo Competition Philippines - Winners

MadAboutUs is a Digital Photography Competition held at least once a year for the promotion of Marine Ecological Awareness through Digital Underwater Shootouts in the Philippines.

The competition gives the local dive guides the opportunity to improve their skills and serve a growing community of underwater photographers. The recognition that follows brings dignity to their jobs and the motivation to become more professional. As the saying goes in Lembeh, "It is not the dive site . . . it is the dive guide". Better dive guides means better dives for more underwater photographers, and therefore more livelihood and income for the guides as well as for the industry as a whole.

There were three competition levels - beginner, intermediate and open.
