Coral reefs: Rich realms of the sea

BSoUP member Linda Pitkin will be giving two 25 minute presentations entitled 'Coral reefs: Rich realms of the sea' at the Natural History Museum on Sunday 24 February at 12.30 and 14.30 as part of their Natural Diversity season.

'Coral reefs occupy less than one per cent of the Earth's crust, but they support an immense diversity of fishes and other animals. While diving on many of the world's finest reefs in the last 25 years, Linda Pitkin, biologist, author and award-winning underwater photographer, has witnessed an amazing range of animals, from tiny shrimps to huge whale sharks. Join us as she shares her experiences and stunning images and reveals some of the unexpected ways in which animals compete, co-operate and battle for survival in the crowded community of a coral reef.'

You can also watch the event live online at 12.30 on Sunday 24 February at

This month sees the cinema release of a documentary about the shark-finning industry, filmed from the perspective of diver and cameraman Rob Stewart. Sharkwater is the first cinema documentary to address the global scandal of shark finning, and for that reason alone it is a very important film. It has already swept up 22 awards at various film festivals, and is due to open in the UK this month, in partnership with the Shark Trust.

Underwater Photography at LIDS 2008

BSoUP member Alex Mustard will join forces with Photoshop expert Saeed Rashid to host the Underwater Photography Clinic at the London International Dive Show at Excel on the 8th/9th March.

Much of their presentation will focus on helping you get better images, with Alex advising on how to improve your in water photographic techniques and Saeed demonstrating how RAW conversion and Photoshop processing can improve those images you have already taken.

If you would like direct feedback on how you can improve your shots please email some of your images to (the address can handle files up to 20mb, so RAW's or JPEG's are fine). Alternatively you can bring your pictures to the show and give them directly to Alex on the BSoUP stand, in the morning before the presentation.

Alex added "Ideally we are after problem images. Pictures that just aren't as good as you hoped that they would be. But we would also like a few stunners to be submitted, as a lot can also be learned from discussing why they are so effective."

Cornish Mermaid to Speak at Maritime Museum in Cornwall

UK record breaking Cornish Freediver Hannah Stacey will be taking you on journey to the deep at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth on Wednesday 27th February 2008.

An incredible sport, not known by many, freediving involves diving to extraordinary depths on a single breath of air.  Hannah's deepest dive is a breathtaking 54 metres. Holding her breath for an astounding four and half minutes this dive is equivalent to the height of over 11 double decker buses!

Hannah has only been freediving for seven years but is clearly a natural.  After her first day of training she was swimming down to 30 metres and holding her breath for over two minutes. In fact, women make better freedivers than men because they have an extra layer of fat which preserves heat in cold waters.  And they can hold their breath for longer.

Hannah will discuss the ancient origins of freediving and how she initially got into the sport which has also landed her stunt roles in two box office feature films, most recently as a mermaid for actress Kelly Brook.

Join Hannah as she takes you into her underwater world and seize this exciting opportunity to hear her intriguing insight into what it feels like to be so far from the surface.

Tickets are available at £7 for lecture only and £15 to include two-course buffet.  Doors and bar open from 6pm.  To book your seats please call 01326 214546

Hannah Stacey's achievements include:

7 times UK record holder

2 times National Women's Freediving Champion

2004 World Female Freediver of the Year

UK Constant Weight UK Record : 54 metres - this record was broken in June 2007 by Sara Campbell.

UK Dynamic Apnea Record: 119 metres

BSoUP February Meeting

The Next BSoUP meeting takes place on Wednesday 20th February 2008 at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. in The Holland Club, Imperial College, South Kensington, London SW7. Directions.

Photo techniques: Creative by Tony Baskeyfield

As the owner and Creative Director of a graphic design and photographic studio,  Plus Two Design Ltd, BSoUP member Tony Baskeyfield focuses on the need to be 'creative' every day.  But he also spends a lot of time applying that focus to things in the underwater world - a diver for over 35 years and an underwater photographer for 10 of those years, BSAC's Travel Club Photographic Correspondent, winner of SUBIOS twice as well as many other awards, Tony takes his camera underwater in places from the Seychelles to East Anglia.  This month his talk 'Out of the box" explores the creative process and goes beyond taking just a nice, well exposed and sharp underwater image.

Focus On Competition: Animal Behaviour. Rules and on-line entry form.

Simon Brown
Simon Brown

Main event: Shooting the Military - Part II by Simon Brown.

Last year Simon told us about his 'shooting' the work of the Defence Dive School and showed us just what it took to become a military diver. Over the last 12 months he has been documenting the kind of work a successful trainee military diver could be tasked with. Simon photographed the Northern Diving Group (NDG) at work dealing with these bombs, safe in the knowledge that if 1000lbs of explosive decided to "work as intended" his passing would be instantaneous.  In addition to covering the work of the Royal Navy, Simon will reveal the "story behind the feature" and talk about just what it took to get these features, both above and below the waves. For light relief Simon will also talk about his "Mission Impossible" features for DIVE Magazine - 'Diving by Train' (can 2 divers get 94 kgs of kit to Portland by train, bus and taxi?) and 'Operation Flat Pack' (you'll have to come to the meeting to find out about that one!).

Bristol Underwater Photography Group - February Meeing

The next meeting of the Bristol Underwater Photography Group (BUPG) takes place on Tuesday 12 February at 8.00 p.m.

Please note that the meeting will be at their new venue - The Casson Centre, Rodway Road, Patchway, BS34 5DQ (map)

The Photo Forum will be led by Alan James and will focus on 'Fish'.

The monthly competition theme is 'Divers'.

The Annual Print Competition for the BUPG trophy will also take place, so bring along your prints - one British, one Overseas. Check the rules first.
