Canon EOS IDs announced
The new 21.1-megapixel, full-frame Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III Digital SLR* camera brings the power of Canon U.S.A., Inc.'s professional imaging excellence and innovation into sharper focus than ever before. While Canon's EOS-1D series has dominated the 35mm-based professional Digital SLR market for the past six years, the new EOS-1Ds Mark III Digital SLR takes Canon's pro-digital prowess into and the realm of high-fashion and commercial photo studios where bulkier, medium-format cameras previously reigned.
The camera's fast, five-frame-per-second (fps) shooting rate for bursts of up to 56 Large/Fine (21-megapixel) JPEGS or 12 RAW images is unmatched in its class, making it the ideal instrument for capturing the fluid motion and free-flowing lines of location-based fashion photography as well as a wide range of other professional photographic applications. Canon EOS 40D announced
The Canon EOS 40D DIGITAL SLR Camera from Canon U.S.A., Inc. is scheduled to begin sailing into stores in early September. Building on the success of Canon's perennially popular "prosumer" EOS 20D and 30D models, the EOS 40D advances the state-of-the-art for mid-range Digital SLR cameras, making it a natural first choice for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals, and an ideal second body for more established photo pros.
From the camera's newly enhanced, 10.1-megapixel CMOS imaging sensor (designed and manufactured by Canon) and its proprietary and super-efficient DIGIC III image processor, to its completely redesigned autofocus sensor and fast, 6.5 frame-per-second (fps) continuous shooting capability , the EOS 40D SLR puts the fun in functionality and makes serious photo business a positive pleasure.

Planning and preparing a winning portfolio - with Sam Bean LRPS

Sam Bean's British Portfolio 2005 |
composition, subject choice, colour balance, harmony or contrast, and the combination of macro and wide-angle shots. Additionally Sam will cover how important it is to respond to the needs of the voting audience and deliver the 'wow' factor using fresh ideas, creative and unusual images and breaking with traditional rules.
Sam is highly qualified to provide tips on portfolios having a string of impressive achievements to her name. Like many successful photographers she first learnt and developed her photography with veteran BSoUP member and teacher Martin Edge. |
Following her first workshop with Martin in 2002 Sam went on to win the BSoUP Beginners Portfolio 2003, came joint first with Alex Mustard in the BSoUP Best of British Portfolio 2005, and 2nd in the BSoUP International Open Portfolio in 2006. At the prestigious British Underwater Image Festival 2007 Sam was thrilled to achieve first place in the Sea and Sea portfolio category. As if this was not enough, Sam's most recent portfolio success has been the Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society for her portfolio panel of ten print images (see July News).

'Focus on' competition - International 'Focus on'
Try your hand at our 3rd international competition inviting underwater photographers from around the blue planet. Last year we had entries from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Egypt, France, Germany, Monaco, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, the Slovak Republic, Spain, Switzerland, Turks and Caicos and the UK. Upload
your images here.
View last year's winning images here.
Portfolio workshop
Following our past successful workshop sessions, this evening we will complement Sam's talk with an interactive portfolio workshop evening. Some accomplished photographers will be on hand to offer advice and suggestions in creating your own, perfect portfolio. Hopefully members received the planning email late July. The idea is for members to bring one of their own portfolios partially constructed with a number of alternate images so the experts can comment on what you have done and help you improve it. You may wish to bring 20 or 25 images to give a good selection (but not much more than that please or it will be too many to get through).

BSoUP's 40th Anniversary - Members portraits wanted please
BSoUP will be mounting an exhibition to celebrate its 40th anniversary at the Dive Show organised by DIVER Magazine in Birmingham on 13/14 October 2007. We'll be showing a lot of different things to illustrate what BSoUP is, who we are and some of the things that the Society and its members have done over the years. There a couple of things we would like to get from all BSoUP members in order to make this a display about all of BSoUP. |
First, will all BSoUP members please send a passport type image of yourself - minimum size 45mm or 530 pixels high and 300 dpi . We are planning a display of as many current BSoUP faces as possible just to show how many of us there are! Preferably send your image as an e-mail attachment to Brian Pitkin or by post to Brian Pitkin, 12 Coningsby Road, South Croydon, Surrey, CR2 6QP or bring it to the next BSoUP meeting.
Second, can all BSoUP members please tell us about any photographic successes you have had over the years. They don't have to be recent - in fact it's the ones in the early years between 1967 and 1992 we are particularly keen to know about. This can be competition wins, publications, or anything else that you think might be of interest. If you tell us about it by email first, then we can decide how we are going to use the information and whether we might want to get the related images from you. |
