December 31st is the last day for submitting entries to the 2008 Beneath the Sea Worldwide Underwater Photo/Video Competition
Underwater photographers, digital and film, will compete for the coveted David Doubilet award for excellence in underwater photography – the Grand Prize is a trip for one on the M.V. Telita in Papua New Guinea

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
BSoUP wishes you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Gill McDonald, Lesley Maw and Joss Woolf (right) Andy Cooper (who took the picture) and Linda & Brian Pitkin visited the ice rink at the Natural History Museum prior to BSoUP's very successful 40th Anniversary party last Wednesday.
Joss also found time to prepare the amazing buffet for the party, which was supplemented with an enormous carton of mince pies donated by Camareas Underwater and some bottles of wine donated by Steve Warren of Ocean Optics. Our thanks to you all! |

London Diving Chamber Annual Lectures
The London Diving Chamber is running its Annual Dive Lectures on 31st January 2008, at the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore, from 6.30pm.
The event is free but you must pre-register. All the tickets went last year within 24 hours of being announced.
Speakers are Cameraman and Director Mike Valentine (top left with Angelina Jolie) and Great Ocean Adventurer Monty Halls (bottom left).

BSoUP Open Portfolio Competition 2007
Congratulations to BSoUP member Shannon Conway who won the BSoUP Trophy and a cheque for £100 donated by DIVE Magazinein last night's Open Portfolio Competition. There were a total of 23 portfolios submitted.

Eleonora Manca, Best Newcomer in this year's BSAC

BSAC Travel Club photographic competition
Congratulations to BSoUP member Eleonora Manca who was voted Newcomer of the Year in the BSAC Travel Club photographic competition. Eleonora's image was fantastic black and white shot of a Southern stingray taken in the Cayman Islands.
Eleonora won a week for two on Tony Backhurst Scuba Travel's "Get Wrecked" holiday on 'Typhoon', a luxury liveaboard in the Red Sea, worth £1790.
Eleonora also came third in the Newcomer category with a cute shot of a blenny in a sponge taken in Bali, Indonesia
Congratulations also to BSoUP member Steve Jones who came second in the Open category with an image of a manta ray and diver taken in the Maldives. Further details: www.bsactravelclub.co.uk/

MCS' new website - Cool Seas
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) recently launched its spectacular new Cool Seas website, www.mcsuk.org/coolseas. The state-of-the-art website features interactive games and fun activities, beautiful images and plenty of information about UK marine wildlife, all presented in an entertaining way to appeal to a younger audience.
The website is the latest addition to the MCS Cool Seas Roadshow, which has been touring England’s primary schools and public events, with life-sized marine animal models, since September 2006.

Whales Revenge
Whales Revenge is an ambitious campaign to gather a million signatures for a petition to the International Whaling Commission to stop whaling.
So far they have exceeded 66,000 signatures from 238 countries.
Every year thousands of precious mammals are slaughtered in the name of so-called 'scientific research'.
Add your voice by signing their petition and then forwarding it everyone you know.

International Year of the Reef 2008
The United Nations has designated 2008 as the International Year of the Reef - a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the importance of coral reefs and the threats they face.
Three of the UK’s most respected marine conservation groups – Coral Cay Conservation, Blue Ventures and Project AWARE Foundation – announced today they have joined forces to promote coral reef conservation during the International Year of the Reef 2008.
Throughout 2008 the three UK groups will announce public events and activities to promote reef conservation and motivate people to take action to protect them.

Los Angeles Underwater Photograhic Society International Competition
Congratulations to BSoUP member Derek Haslam from Northwich, Cheshire who took first, second and third place in the Green/Cold Water category.
Derek's winning shot of a trout (left) was taken at the Caernwray Dive Centre in Cumbria using a Nikon D200 using a 10.5 mm lens in a Sea & Sea housing and twin Nikon SB 105 strobes. |
Congratulations also to BSoUP member Graham Eaton from Neston, Wirral who won the Behaviour category in the LAUPS 45th International Underwater Photographic Competition.
Graham's winning shot of Mallard's fighting over food (right) was taken in Llyn Padarn, North Walesusing Nikon D200 using a 12-24 mm lens in a Sea & Sea housing and twin Sea & Sea YS 110 strobes.

11th International Underwater Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia

The 11th International Underwater Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia will be honoured to present your films at the festival.
Films for the contest must be 2006 or 2007 productions, with
at least 30% underwater shots and
formats are BETA SP, DV Cam or
MiniDV (PAL). The subject is free. Competition
admission is free.
Deadline for registration (for contest participants) is November, 5th. Deadline for dispatch is 15th November.
