Main event- Field notes: Trials with bew lenses, by
Alex Mustard
We are very grateful to Alex for stepping into a vacated slot at the
last minute. Alex will give an informal talk about his trials with
four new lenses he has been using underwater during the last few
months. First up is Tokina's new Fisheye zoom - the 10-17mm which
seems to be a must-have lens designed specifically for underwater
photography. Then, Alex will describe two new macro lenses. First,
Nikon's new 105mm macro lens, which incorporates image stabilisation
for the first time in a macro lens, making balanced light macro much
more achievable. Next, Sigma's 150mm macro, a tough lens to use
(being the equivalent of 225mm on a film camera), but a powerful one
when the right subjects present themselves. And finally a detailed
look at Alex's fisheye-teleconverter technique, which provides an
unusual view of macro foreground and wide angle background. This lens
is well suited to approachable critters both in the UK and abroad.
Alex will discuss the strengths, weaknesses and techniques required
for each.
Alex shoots with a Nikon D2X in
a Subal housing. He is BSoUP's digital officer, as well a
co-administrator of Wetpixel. He is a contributing editor of Dive
Magazine, columnist and editorial consultant for FiNS Magazine,
honorary editor of the new Ocean Geographic (launched this month) and
senior contributor to Underwater Photography Magazine. Alex is a
popular speaker on underwater and wildlife photography and regularly
gives talks both in the UK and abroad. Alex's images have won him
many awards, including at both the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the
Year and the Antibes Festival for the last two years. Although his
girlfriend has beaten him in the last two BSoUP 'focus on'
competitions!
