Technical - Digital Assett Management Part 2 by JP Trenque

Our publicity officer JP Trenque completes his hugely valuable advice on digital image management, begun in January. If you have been using a digital camera for more than two weeks, you will probably already have quite a collection of images. JP has recently discovered a new method of cataloguing and storing your photos. He will share his tips on naming, ranking and keywording your picture files to allow easy storage, access and retrieval.

JP has enjoyed increasing success in recent years not least of which was being voted BBC News Photographer of the Year 2005 and recently his 'Life beneath the waves' portfolio was featured prominently on the BBC News website.

Annual Competition - Theme Portfolio

Try your hand at this popular annual competition combining skills of underwater photography and constructing a cohesive portfolio. Advice and rules. Open to members only. Along with the BSoUP Theme Portfolio Trophy, Ultimate Sports, publishers of definitive guides for sports and adventure travel enthusiasts, is generously donating £100 to the winner www.ultimate-sports.co.uk

Main Event - Composition, Communication and Commercialisation by Alex Mustard

The technical aspects of underwater photography are crucial to master, but once we have achieved a certain level of competence, where do we go? How do we make our images stand out? Composition is the answer. It is easy to think of composition in terms of rules: diagonals, thirds etc. But, this is just the beginning. Composition is actually about making an image communicate. Ideally compositional choices should work synergistically with image content, both with the subject matter and the lighting to create a strong message. The composition should reinforce the story of the image created by its content.

Alex Mustard with his housed Nikon D2X

The intended use of an image also influences how we compose it. Some images can be jacks of all trades, but more often photos are most powerful when created bespoke for their purpose. Different attributes are required for underwater photos that are intended to please ourselves, to win competitions, to hang as prints, to sell to advertisers and for editorial content and magazine covers. Other images are required to work together, in portfolios, print galleries and for extensive collections in books. These require different considerations.

In essence, Alex's talk will help you to get more from your viewfinder.

BSoUP at LIDS 2007

We had a very busy and successful weekend at the London International Dive Show at EXCEL with several new members joining and many more people expressing interest and an intention to come to a meeting. It was again evident that reasonable priced digital compacts are bringing more and more people into underwater photography - including a number of land SLR users who have decided this is a more reasonably priced and less stressful route to taking pictures under water than housing their SLRs!

BSoUP thanks Joss Woolf, Muna Muammar, Richard Boucher, Jane Morgan, JP Trenque, Jane Burnett, Lesley Maw, Pete Ladell, Gill McDonald, Jan and Mike Maloney, Martin Davies, Alison Mayor, Martha Tressler and Anthony Holley.  Special thanks to Joss and Muna who pitched up early on Saturday to set up the stand.

Martin Edge wins DIVER Award

Congratulations to BSoUP member Martin Edge who won the DIVER Award 2006 for the Publication of the Year for his book The Underwater Photographer.
In its third edition this book has evolved to become almost a standard work of reference. Martin has developed his writing skills over the years and his book is recommended for anyone pursuing the art of underwater photography, especially with digital imaging in mind.

Stoney Cove/DIVER MagazinePhoto Splash-in

Stoney Cove Diver Magazine

The next Photo Splash-in at Stoney Cove will take place on Saturday, 14th April 2007, starting off from the quayside at 8am. Competitors are welcome to turn up later but many of the best results in previous years have been from early starters. You can pre-register or simply turn up on the day.

There will be three categories: close-up, wide-angle and aquatic life, and the £5 entry fee covers all. Up to 3 pictures can be entered in each category. The competition is digital only this year and computers will be available to download images and select entries.

There will be prizes for the winners, and free hot drinks and magazines from the DIVER Magazine marquee (near the shower-block) for competitors, supporters and other divers enjoying a dip in Stoney Cove.

Every picture entered for the competition must be shot at Stoney Cove on 14th April 2007, using jpeg format and a digital multi-media card with no previously recorded images. Post-shooting adjustment or manipulation will not be allowed.

This is an opportunity for everyone to stake their claim to fame. All levels of ability are welcome and even the most seasoned photographers will be only as good as they are on the day. It's also a great chance to gain experience in time for the British Splash-in Championship to be held in Plymouth on July 7th, organised by the British Society of Underwater Photographers in association with the National Marine Aquarium.

A selection of winners' entries will appear in DIVER Magazine for all to see. Further coverage will be given on www.divernet.com, so you could be published both in print and on line.

Full details are available on www.divernet.com. To register, call Margaret at Stoney Cove on 01455 273089 or email: marg@stoneycove.com.
