Open Portfolio Competition for the DIVE Magazine trophy

Congratulations to Steve Jones who won this year's Open Portfolio competition. Steve was presented with the DIVE Magazine trophy by News Editor Charlotte Boan and received a cheque for £100 kindly donated by the magazine. There were a total of 24 portfolios submitted.

Alessandro Dodi

We are very sad to learn that the very talented Italian underwater photographer Alessandro Dodi has died while on a rebreather course in Italy's Lake Como.

According to Lino Chiumarulo, a close friend, Dodi made a dive using one unit, then swapped to another to descend again. The accompanying expert surfaced when he lost sight of Dodi and, having established that he had not surfaced, redescended to find him motionless on the bottom, his mouthpiece detached.

Dodi was a winner in Diver Magazine's Image 2003 photographic competition, taking four medals including gold in the Grand Master (Marine Life/People/Scenery Prints) category.

Dodi's website won the Best Artistic site award at the Antibes Festival in 2004.

Celebrity judges Stephen Frink, Dr. Alexander Mustard, and Eric Cheng will select winners after the Jan 7, 2007 deadline. Winners will be announced on stage at the 2007 Our World-Underwater film festival in Chicago, Illinois (February 9-11, 2007).

Our World Underwater Show Photo Competition

In association with the Our World-Underwater Show Wetpixel.com and DivePhotoGuide.com have teamed up again in association with Our World Underwater to celebrate the beauty and delicacy of the marine environment with their 2nd annual international underwater photography and video competition. The competition aims to become the “Superbowl” of international underwater photo competitions - with fantastic prizes, celebrity judges and the opportunity to have your images showcased to the world as some of the world’s best.

DEEP Indonesia Competition

Over $20,000 in prizes!

Wetpixel & DivePhotoGuide have organized a second international competition in association with Indonesia’s first Diving, Adventure Travel and Water sports expo, DEEP Indonesia. 

Photographers will compete in 7 categories to win premium dive travel packages to some of the top photo destinations in the world, photo equipment, dive gear and more! Dive packages include trips to Wakatobi, South Africa, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bali, Palau, Philippines, Grand Cayman and the Red Sea!

The contest includes a category for images that focus on conservation and the marine environment, one specifically for entries taken by compact digital cameras, and one specifically for Indonesian entrants.

Forty years of BSoUP

BSoUP was founded in November 1967 by Colin Doeg and Peter Scoones (see The start of something big).

In late November/ early December 2007 we are intending to celebrate this landmark with a 40th Anniversary Dinner Party at a venue in London yet to be announced.

Please e-mail Brian Pitkin now if you would like to join BSoUP to mark this occasion, so that we can get some idea of the level of interest. Please include 'BSoUP 40th Anniversary' in the Subject of the e-mail.

NELOS U/W Photo, Film & Video Festival

Closing date for the competition was 27 October.

The 18th bi-annual NELOS UW Photo, Film & Video Festival is scheduled to take place during the week end of December 2-3rd just south of Antwerp in Belgium.

Beneath the Sea 2007 - Worldwide Underwater Photo/Video Competition

Beneath the Sea 2007 is pleased to invite Photographers and Videographers to enter its annual Worldwide Underwater Photo/video competition.

Underwater photographers will compete for the coveted David Doubilet award for excellence in underwater photography and a ten day trip for one on the M.V. Telita in Papua New Guinea

Underwater Videographers will compete for the distinguished Stan Waterman award for excellence in underwater video and a one week trip for two aboard the Caribbean Explorer II

Underwater Photographic Artists compete for the celebrated Jim Church award for excellence in creative underwater photography  and a trip for one aboard the S.M.Y Ondina in Raja Ampat, Indonesia.

The winners of the Beneath the Sea 2007 Worldwide Photo/Video Competition will be announced at the Saturday Film Festival the weekend of Beneath the Sea’s Dive Ocean Adventure Exposition and travel Show, March 23rd, 24th, and 25th, 2007, at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey. In addition to the awards that the Grand Prize winners of each category will receive, there will be prizes for all First, Second, and Third place winners.
