BSoUP
Annual Splash-In Competition 2005
Mount
Batten Centre, Plymouth, Devon
Saturday
2nd July 2005
The
2005 BSoUP Splash-In is now less than a month away. Grab your
dive gear, grease those o'rings and head for Devon for this
challenging and fun event based right on the edge of Plymouth
Sound. Underwater photographers
from all over the country gather in Plymouth once a year for
this popular competition, vying for a host of prestigious
awards in three categories of
film & digital on the day, and prints taken prior to the
event. Judging takes place by the audience in the evening
after a hearty barbeque and the
prizes are awarded on the spot.
In
the past, advance registration has only been necessary for
the print competition. This year, however, we are making a
polite request for you to tell us about other requirements
in advance. |
Let
us know whether you will be needing film (so we can determine
external processing requirements), whether you require use
of a laptop (so we can source them), and whether you
would like to join us for the tasty barbeque on Saturday evening
(so we can warn the caterers). You
are still very welcome to enter the on the day competitions
on the day if you decide to come at the last minute - but
please note that prints MUST
be registered in advance.
However,
it would help us greatly if you could use the entry
form and register everything in advance. Just amend it,
save it and return to me by email (no need to sign). Alternatively,
print it (adjusting the margins on your machine to make it
a single page if necessary) and pop it in the post - the address
is on the form. You can send a cheque with the form, pay electronically
or pay on the day it's up to you, just delete the relevant
bits on the payment section.
Return
by Sunday 26th June is mandatory for prints. |

TRAVEL
PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION - CHRIS COE
Travel
is an integral part of pursuing our passion - whether down
the road to the nearest beach or further afield to the myriad
of near and far flung
places we journey to while seeking that elusive perfect or
winning image.
This
month we are very excited to introduce Chris Coe, a world
renowned travel photography expert who created the 'Travel
Photographer of the Year'
competition. Chris would very much like to see more underwater
images entered so in the first part of the evening he will
be telling us about the
competition and showcasing some of its previous winners.
FOCUS
ON COMPETITION - BRITISH MARINE LIFE
Please email digital entries in advance to:
competitions@bsoup.org
Advance
entry is preferable, but we will accept digital entries on
the night this month. We will run the digital and slide competitions
separately again
if there are enough slide entries to warrant it, otherwise
the competitions will be combined. For all other details on
the monthly competitions please check Focus

MAIN
EVENT - DIGITAL, WHY BOTHER? - CHRIS COE
In
his role as a professional travel photographer Chris has embraced
the world of digital photography rather cautiously. |
He
has some thought provoking musings on the pros and cons of
digital cameras, their limitations and the misunderstandings
about their capabilities that have been caused by (in his
opinion) hyped up marketing from the manufacturers. Whether
you are shooting digital now, considering how to make the
transition from film, or even planning to stay with film for
the foreseeable future, his main talk
entitled “Digital, Why Bother?” should generate some stimulating
thought and debate.
Chris
is a self-taught photographer who, since turning professional
in 1992, has combined his passion for photography with a love
of travel. His work has been widely published in newspapers,
magazines and books and his clients include major multinational
companies. Chris has shot over 40 travel and coffee table
books. His first book on photography, ‘The Art of Landscape
Photography' is widely used as a reference work. Chris lectures
on a variety of photographic subjects, including travel, landscape
and stock photography at major conferences and events such
as Focus on Imaging and the Daily
Telegraph Adventure Show.
In
2003, after many years working in the travel industry and
seeing at first-hand what little recognition is given to many
of the very talented
photographers who shoot travel related images, Chris decided
to set up the 'Travel Photographer of the Year' competition.
In 2004, photographers from 40 countries participated and
the overall winner was an amateur photographer and retired
lecturer from Malaysia. This is a truly international
competition. The 2005 competition has an impressive line-up
of travel and photography prizes worth over £60,000
(see www.tpoty.com for details). Open to amateur and professional photographers,
it features four portfolio
categories - Human Spirit, Travellers’ Tales, Go Beyond and
Natural World - and a Single Image category.
We
anticipate an extremely interesting and inspiring evening.
