BSoUP
September meeting
Standng
in for Alex Mustard, who was delayed by Hurrican Ivan (see
below), the Society's President and Webmaster
Brian Pitkin gave a presentation entitled 'Confessions of
a digital virgin'. Brian descirbed his first experiences using
the Nikon D100 with a 60 mm macro lens in a Sea & Sea
housing armed with two YS-90 strobes on his recent trip to
Komodo, Indonesia on Sea Safari II with Kararu.

Brian
Pitkin
The
Focus on competition 'The world in our hands' attracted only
8 entries. Winner and runner-up was Chris McTernan. Third
place went to Jane Morgan. Congratulations to you both! |
Anthony
Holley enthused about his passion for nudibranchs showing
examples taken from many parts of the world over many years
using a Nikonos with extension tubes, a Nikon F90 in a Subal
housing and most recently a Ricoh digital camera. Surprisingly
Anthony acheived some very high quality images with the latter
using natural light in St Abbs.

Alex
Mustard reports safe return from Cayman
Dear All,
I am sorry
that I was not able to make BSoUP on Wednesday. But I was
stranded in Cayman in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
After being
on the island when Hurricane Charly went over I was very blazee
about hurricanes. No more. There is a lot of difference between
a close encounter (100 miles away) with a fast moving category
3 storm and a full on hit from a big storm. Hurricane Ivan
was category 5 and tracking at only 9mph on the island. On
the island they measured the storm with a max windspeed of
209mph and a sustained windspeeds of over 150mph for more
than 4 hours. The island is completely devastated.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3660028.stm
All of
my Divequest group are now back in the UK safely (most, including
me, got back this a.m.). With the help of local knowledge,
some sensible decisions and a bit of luck we were amongst
the first few hundred people off the island. |
I even
managed to get 4 of us a lift to the Bahamas in a six-seater
Gulfstream III private jet! No luggage allowance problems
on that one!
We actually
managed to complete all of our scheduled dives. Got sharks,
stingrays, eaglerays and visability that at times exceeded
50m. And of course the coral spawned on three nights and I
was able to document 2 new species spawning for the island,
and get much better observations of the others. I even got
a round of applause when I returned to the boat after the
final spawning dive - since my predictions allowed everyone
to see all the details of the action right on cue, to the
nearest minute.
See you
all soon - once I have finished enjoying having running water,
electricty and a telephone again.
Regards,
Alex (alive
and well) |

Photography in the Heart of Mountainous Snowdonia
The National Trust in Snowdonia is offering Underwater Photographers
the chance to hone their skills at its newly renovated property
Craflwyn Hall. The hall was a Victorian gentlemen's residence
which has been sympathetically restored thanks to European
Objective One money. From September it will be the base for
a variety of special interest and activity holidays.
One of
the first of these, is a weekend-long Underwater Photography
holiday, to be held from 3rd-5th December. It will take the
form of a series of intensive workshops covering: dealing
with different types of file, experimenting with colour, making
the most of your images for print or projection, using Adobe
Photoshop and a variety of other skills specific to underwater
photography requirements. |
It's not
all work and no play though. While they are here, the visitors
will be able to make the most of the spectacular surroundings.
Craflwyn is situated at the foot of Snowdon and enjoys breathtaking
views. The estate has over 200 acres of woodland, parkland
and magical, abandoned gardens. Full catering will be provided,
including 3 course dinners every evening using the best of
local, Welsh produce.
The workshops
will be lead by local photographer Paul Kay FRPS. He has spent
over 20 years photographing underwater, and his current project
involves shooting through the surface of a range of lakes
and rivers across Britain. A selection of his work can be
seen at www.marinewildlife.co.uk
The cost
of the weekend is £260 which includes all accommodation,
food, instruction and VAT. Please phone Jane Richardson on
01766 510120 for more details or log onto our website: www.craflwyn.org |

NUDIBRANCH PASSION by ANTHONY HOLLEY
As his
many friends know, Anthony has a love affair with nudibranchs!
He will describe the huge variety of different species, locations
they are found in and the equipment he uses to photograph
them - including plenty of examples of his beautiful images.
|
Anthony
is a valuable member of the BSoUP committee. He 1st dived in
Malta in 1984, hired a Nikonos on his 9th dive achieving some
good octopus shots and never looked back. Sadly he lost his
Hanimex, Nikonos V, precious 15mm lens, Nikonos III and various
other gear in a shipwreck in South China Sea in 1994. So, there
was nothing for it but to buy a Nikon F90 and Subal.
Anthony is the proud winner of several international competitions
including Subios III and Subios IV in the Seychelles and Ambon
Manise Marine Festival in Indonesia. He is also a contributor
to Dive and Diver magazines amongst other books and publications.
He was
Diving Officer for Coral Cay in Belize and Raleigh International
in Borneo in the early 90s after being made redundant. He
has also been involved in some fascinating and high profile
expeditions such as an archaeological-photographic expedition
searching for wrecks around the Vietnamese Spratley Islands
in the South China Sea, recovering porcelain from a 750 year
Chinese junk in the Java Sea, assisting Mike Wong on numerous
extended UW photographic expeditions in the South China Sea,
Borneo and Peninsula Malaysia and also assisting Peter Scoones,
a Blue Planet photographer, filming grey whales in the Russian
Far East.
Plus he
has his own nudibranch website www.holleyuwphoto.com
Now that's a biography that puts many of us to shame!

Housing
for Canon 1ds wanted for hire
I have
big shoot coming up at the end of October, involving full
body painting of models, and prosthetics to create a part-human,
part-fish look.
I currently
use a Canon D60 in a Sea & Sea housing, but am now finding
that the quality is just not good enough for what I need.
I am therefore trying to find someone with a housing for a
Canon 1ds that might be willing to hire it out to me for this
shoot. None of the pro hire outlets have anything like this,
which is why I thought I would try for an individual. I have
all the relevant ports/connectors/strobes so it would literally
just be the housing.
|
If you
know of anyone who has such a housing and might be interested
to hire it, I would be extremely grateful if you could let
me know. Otherwise if there is any way to put a posting on
the website, or send an email to the members. I would not
be able to wait until the next meeting to make an announcement
as it will be too close to the shoot date.
Many thanks
and I hope to hear from you soon.
