Inspired
at 10 years old by a Hans Hass book, he set off overland from
his native Switzerland for the Red Sea at 19 and his fate
was sealed. Kurt's illustrious career has included underwater
photography in many arenas including science, books, fashion,
teaching, advertising, journals, films and television. He
has been awarded more than a hundred prestigious accolades
for his outstanding work, has published several books, judges
international competitions, speaks at many high profile forums
and also runs residential u/w photo courses in the South of
France. He remains aa passionate now for the awesome beauty
of the salty blue as when he set out over 35 years ago, and
has a prolific collection of pictures and memories of adventure,
travel, technical challenges, stress and exhileration, friendship,
defeat and triumph.
Together
with a continuing desire to share the profound joy and wonder
of the blue washed treasures beneath the waves through his
photography, he is also deeply committed to combatting the
senseless destruction of marine life and is involved in many
conservation activities including sharks, manatees and turtles.
He is also Project Leader of the Sea Turtle Bali Campaign
in
association with PADI A.W.A.R.E. Check out Kurt's informative
website on www.photosub.com

The Image
Festival is the world's biggest and most celebrated competition
for underwater photographers and film-makers of all kinds
and at all levels of experience. It takes place in the autumn,
the closing date for entries being Monday, 29 September.
There are
no fewer than nine glittering trophies, with thousands of
pounds' worth of prizes to go with them, plus 54 gold, silver
and bronze medals, and up to 100 Highly Commended and Exhibition
Certificates to be won.
No photographer
needs to fear being at a disadvantage in this competition,
because there are as many as five categories and 18 classes
for both 'beginners' and experienced camerapersons, non-professionals
and professionals. And there are special awards for film shot
in British waters, where visibility is less photographer-friendly
than it is abroad.
The categories
cover prints, slides, portfolios, manipulated images (including
digital images), and moving images (including videos and cine
films).
The winners
will be presented with their trophies and medals at a wonderful
Festival show held in conjunction with Dive 2003 at the NEC,
Birmingham, on 15/16 November. Enter or not, you must be there.
