BSoUP Committee changes

At BSoUP's Annual General Meeting on 18 November Colin Doeg thanked all members of the the Committee for their efforts during the year.

Jan Maloney stood down as Meetings Secretary, although she continues to be a Committee Member.

Lesley Maw steps into Jan's shoes to organise next year's programme.

Alex Mustard, a marine biologist and founder of YUP from Southampton joins the committee as a member.

Jane Morgan wins Beginners Portfolio Competition for the DIVER Trophy

Congratulations to Jane Morgan who won this year's Beginners Portfolio Competition for the prestigious DIVER Trophy, The competition followed the November AGM and attracted 18 entries.

Jane has been taking pictures for just 18 months and has never won a national or international competition.

Warren Williams honoured at BSoUP AGM

Long time BSoUP member, Warren Williams, joined the short list of Honarary BSoUP Members - Colin Doeg, Tim Glover, Geoff Harwood, Brian Pitkin, Peter Rowlands, Peter Scoones, and Stanton Waterman - at the AGM.

Tim Glover assisted by 'bodyguard' and diving buddy Peter Dick gave an amusing illustrated account of their underwater photographic assigments to cover the early attempts and successes at swimming the English Channel underwater in the early 1960's.

Lesley Maw wins DIVE front cover photo competition

Congratulations to BSoUP committee member Lesley Maw, whose excellent image of a butterfly fish won DIVE's front cover photograph competition

Lesley's prize was a trip to SUBIOS 2002, the Seychelles Underwater Festival, which took place in Ocotober.

Congratulations to BSoUP member Alex Mustard (right) who came first and also won the 'Prix Jean et Maryse Chaperoux' in the Black and White prints category for his rays (below, right); and third and a mention for orignality in the Colour Prints category.

Earth from the Air Exhibition - back in London by popular demand

Earth from the Air - A Photographic Portrait of Our Planet, by celebrated French aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand is back at the Natural History Museum, South Kensington, London by popular demand.

The exhibition, in the garden, is open until 10pm daily from mid October until December 2002.

This astonishing photographic project is a visual record of the state of our planet today. If you missed it this summer, then here is a second opportunity to call in on your way to the next BSoUP meeting at Imperial College - nearest underground station South Kensington on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines.

Next BSoUP Meeting - Wednesday 20 November

The November meeting of the Society will take place at the usual venue, the Holland Club, Imperial College on Wednesday November 20th at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m.

The Annual General Meeting will be followed by the Beginner's Portfolio Competition for the DIVER Trophy.

The Main Event is a presentation by Tim Glover entitled 'Underwater Channel Swim'.

Visions in the Sea 2002

The 6th annual conference, Visions in the Sea, organised by Ocean Optics, takes place over the weekend of 16/17 November at Imperial College, South Kensignton.

The speakers will be Kurt Amsler, Gavin Newman, Tony White, Alex Mustard, John Collins, Kevin Capon, Mark Walker and Georgette Douwma. In addition there will be short talks by Andrew Pugsley and hopefully Wild Insight.

As well as the speakers, Paul Kay and Linda Dunk will be on hand to review your slides.

The highlight of the weekend must be 'An evening with Peter Scoones' followed by the chance to have dinner with the speakers.
