Paul is BSoUP’s competition secretary and has just run BSoUP’s first British and Irish Underwater Photography Championship.  His book about photographic composition, ‘Winning Images with ANY underwater camera’, was published in 2014 to wide acclaim.  He has led photography trips to the Caribbean and Far East, but now concentrates mainly on the Northern and Southern Red Sea.

Focus On - Underwater Excellence (A portfolio of 3 images with at least one wide angle and one macro/close up image. Images can be from locations around the world or from one place, but they do not have to work together as a unified portfolio. What the judge will be looking for is a range of techniques with technical and artistic excellence in each individual image.) The competition is now closed. BSoUP Members only may view the 17 entries in the Competition Slideshow.  You will be asked to log in if you have not done so this session. The competition has been judged by Trevor Rees.  At the meeting all of the entries will be shown and Trevor will present his winners with some feedback about how he chose them.

Terry Steeley: Preparing award-winning images for print competitions. A lover of the printed image, Terry has been successful in every print competition he has entered to date. He attributes much of his success to understanding how to print stunning images. Keen to share his thoughts, Terry will lead you through the stages of preparing an image to print; exploring colour set-up, camera RAW, image sharpening, soft-proofing and finally print.

A diver since 1997, it was not until the Spring 2012 that Terry first took a DSLR into the water. Immediately hooked, he describes himself as 'no longer a diver. I am now an observer, and the oceans, rivers and lakes are my studio.’  His love for underwater photography led him to take a sabbatical from his day job in 2013, travelling to numerous destinations from Alaska to French Polynesia in an attempt to fast-track his photography exploring as many different environments as possible, learning from many talented trip leaders.

His love for photography has flourished and Terry never returned full-time to the office. Terry continues to travel developing his knowledge of underwater photography leading big animal trips for Big Fish Expeditions.

In 2014, Terry won the Grand Prize in the BSoUP/ Diver Print Competition; in the same year he was also runner-up in The Travel Photographer of the Year competition and National Geographic’s shot of the day. He has also placed in many other competitions including being runner-up in the BSoUP/ Diver Print Competition Overseas category in 2013.

Professionally, Terry is a digital expert. An Adobe Evangelist since 2002, he is also accredited as being an Apple Solutions Expert, a Hewlett Packard industry influencer and a demo artist for Wacom. Passionate about sharing his knowledge, Terry has worked with the RPS, AOP and SWPP and has been a regularly contributor at trade shows and seminars throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
