Rob White: Monochrome – subject selection and how to create.  Rob will cover what he believes to be the important components of a good black and white image along with some examples.  He will then describe several ways to produce black and white images using Adobe Lightroom.  This is in anticipation of our June Focus On competition, the subject of which is Monochrome!

Rob learned to dive in dive in 1997, became a PADI Instructor in 2004 and started taking photos underwater the following year.  For many years he ran the Shark Dive Experience at the Brighton Sealife Centre.  There he had the good fortune to meet Alex Mustard who, in the space of about 10 minutes, persuaded him to buy a DSLR and a Nauticam housing for it. That was back in 2010 and since then, Rob’s Canon 550D has helped him win various competitions, get articles and photos published in the press and has even led to Rob being the featured “pro-photographer” in an issue of PhotoPlus magazine. He is now running photography courses as well as diving courses, all alongside his day job!

The competition is now closed. BSoUP Members may view the 32 entries in the Competition Slideshow.  You will be asked to log in if you have not done so this session. The competition has been judged by Paul Colley.  At the meeting all of the entries will be shown and Paul will present his winners with some feedback about how he chose them.
Matt Doggett: South Coast to Shetland - The UK's Underwater World.  Matt will talk about some of his favourite UK dive sites and experiences, sharing the stories behind the shots and what he loves about UK diving.  This will include the story of his underwater images of northern gannets, one of which was the overall winner of the British Wildlife Photography Awards in 2012. The Scottish sea lochs are also a firm favourite and Matt will share some of his experiences from these diverse habitats.
Meerkats in the Kalahari got Matt hooked on wildlife photography at university. After gaining his PhD Matt progressed to underwater photography whilst working in the Philippines in 2006/7. He currently works as a marine biologist conducting field surveys and research all around the UK. Outside work Matt can be found on Seasearch dive trips or exploring his local dives sites in search of new images. He uses a Canon 5D mkII and Ikelite housing system and is looking to do more video work in the coming years.
