Next BSoUP Meeting

Tuesday 20 January 2015

The next BSoUP meeting takes place on Tuesday 20 January 2015 at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. in Meeting Room 3, Union Building, Beit Quadrangle, Imperial College, South Kensington, London SW7 [Entrance via Prince Consort Road] (Directions). New and prospective new members will be welcomed from 7.30 p.m. See Welcome.

Peter Scoones – the genius behind the lens

The evening BSoUP will celebrate the remarkable career and achievements of its co-founder, the late Peter Scoones, who last year was awarded the Society’s first Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to underwater photography. Subsequently, we learned that his contribution to wildlife documentary making was even more significant. Single-handedly, he changed forever the way natural history films were made and, for many wildlife cameramen, he was the colleague who they most wished to emulate.

Led by his fellow co-founder, Colin Doeg, several members who were close to Peter during his career will reccount some of the many stories about him. In particular they are Tim Glover, whose workshop he used for some 20 years, Peter Rowlands, a former secretary, chairman and president of BSoUP, who was also involved with Peter for two decades, and Warren Williams, who was his backup diver on several occasions.

The evening will conclude with the showing of a section of Great White Shark followed by Malice in Wonderland, a film which Peter shot in the Red Sea and demonstrates his flair for capturing the natural behaviour of fish within their own environment rather than in a tank or an aquarium. The film won an Emmy, and also shows the Red Sea as it was many years ago before it was ‘invaded’ by so many divers.

BSoUP Members only may view all the entries enlarged in the Competition Slideshow Archive. BSoUP Members may also read a summary of Peter Rowlands' feedback for more details. You will be prompted to login if you have not already done so this session.

Next month's competition is Focus On - Macro/ Close-up - something small.  Could be very, very small, or a bit larger, but make it an exciting image. Deadline 8th February 2015. Please note , as this month, that entries will not be judged by the audience, but by a nominated judge to be announced. The competition is now open.
