September BSoUP Meeting

The next BSoUP meeting takes place on Wednesday, 18 September 2013 at 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. in Room G.01 in the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, South Kensington, London, SW7 5BD (http://www.bsoup.org/Directions.php). New and prospective new members will be welcomed from 7.30 p.m. See Welcome.

Keith Lyall: Macro and Super-macro.  Continuing the series of BSOUP technical talks based on "The Underwater Photographer" by Martin Edge, this talk will present the topics of macro and super macro photography. Often the first experience divers have of underwater photography is through macro or close-up photography. This talk will cover key aspects including equipment, macro basics, lighting options and general subject considerations associated with the creation of macro images, including tips for shooting in the UK and a short intro to super-macro.

Underwater Excellence
Underwater Excellence

Keith has been diving since 2000 and taking a camera underwater since those early days, but even prior to learning to dive Keith was a keen land photographer with underwater photography becoming a natural extension of this interest. His first experience of underwater photography was with a disposable camera in a plastic housing but he has since progressed to a Nikon D300 in a Subal housing! He has numerous awards to his credit in competitions run by BSoUP, Photosub and the British Underwater Image Festival and regularly teaches underwater photography courses.

Underwater Excellence
The Competition is now closed. There were a total of 27 entries, one of which was withdrawn by the photographer because the images were submitted at the wrong resolution. A total of 13 portfolios have been shortlisted for projection. Members whose portfolios have not been shortlisted have been notified by e-mail.

We are currently experiencing  problems with the script which automatically generates the slideshow for the website. Shortlisted entries may be viewed as a pdf via the Competition Slideshow. You will be asked to log in if you have not done so this session.

Saeed Rashid:  Lightroom and beyond. Following on from his last BSoUP talk Saeed will be looking at taking your Adobe Lightroom skills a little further and showing how easy it is to combine more than one program into this simple workflow. He will also be covering compositing, or what some people would say is 'creating a fake image'. He feels this is, like it or not, an important skill to learn and is much easier than you would ever believe. He will show us a quick way to remove a diver or add an extra fish to your image.  And then from there, how to quickly produce a web gallery to wow your friends.
Saeed has been taking underwater pictures for the past 12 years, and started just to pass the time underwater.  He currently uses a Canon 7D in a Nauticam housing. Last year Saeed started leading underwater photography trips, for 'blue o two' to the Red Sea and Maldives. He also runs Adobe Lightroom courses aimed at underwater photographers to help them improve their post processing skills and he fits all that in between his day job at Bournemouth University where he teaches Print design.

RESULTS

Underwater Excellence - Results

Congratulations to Martyn Guess who was the winner of this year's Underwater Excellence Competition. Martyn wins £250 courtesy of DiveQuest.

Congratulations also to Pedro Vierya and Trevor Rees who came second and third respectively.

There were a total of 26 entries of which 13 were short listed for projection and judging at the meeting by the audience present. A further entry was withdrawn because the resolution was too high and as a consequence was 'fuzzy' when pasted into Powerpoint.
