Alex Mustard: Equation Free Domes. Domes are essential for wide angle underwater photography, but not the most exciting subject for a talk. So Alex has promised to put this important talk first so that you're still awake, and he won't be including any equations to send you to sleep! This is a talk filled with practical advice and real world examples to show you the strengths and limitations of different domes and how these vary with different wide angle lenses and different formats of camera.

The talk will focus on mini-domes and their use for close focus work, while contrasting the positives and negatives associated with larger domes and why they can be necessary to get the best out of full frame camera.

Alex is an award winning underwater photographer known for pushing the boundaries to find new ways of capturing images.  He is also the inventor of Magic Filter, associate editor of, contributing editor DIVE Magazine, honorary editor Ocean Geographic Magazine, senior contributor Underwater Photography Magazine, author of The Art of Diving and Reefs Revealed and leader of trips and workshops.  Finally he is on the committee of the British Society of Underwater Photographers!

Theme Portfolio Competition for the BSoUP Theme Portfolio Trophy - a portfolio of 6 images. The competition is now closed. BSoUP Members only may preview the Competition slideshow. You will be asked to login if you have not done so this session.

Alex Mustard: Two Legs Good, Three Legs Better. Tripods are a mainstay of photography on land, but rarely used underwater except for long exposures of wrecks or shooting video. Alex will give an overview of suitable tripods for underwater use and then run through some of the more innovative types of images we can produce with them. Techniques covered will include creative long exposures, painting with light, HDR, backlighting and timelapse. The talk will cover using tripods both for cameras and lighting.
