BSoUP's Underwater Excellence Competition Results

Congratulations to Jane Morgan who was the winner of this year's Underwater Excellence Portfolio Competition. She won the UnderwaterExcellence tropy and a cheque for £250 donated by Dive Quest. See Jane Morgan's U/W Excellence Portfolio for more details.

Jane's portfolio comprised images of Bottlenose Dolphins taken in the Red Sea, a baby loggerhead turtle taken in the Bahamas and Whip Gobies taken in Manado. Jane uses a Nikon 300S and all three of her images were taken using a 16mm lens.

Second place went to Martyn Guess for his portfolio comprising a a nudibranch taken in Kima Bajo, a diver at Boo Window in Raja Ampat and a pink anemone taken at Raja Ampat using a Nikon D300 with macro and wide-angle lenses.

Third place went to Saeed Rashid for his portfolio comprising an image of seals taken in the Farne Islands, a nudibrach on a light box taken in the UK and a Red Sea jellyfish.

Unfortunately neither Jane nor Saeed were present at the meeting to enjoy their respective acheivements.

A total of 32 portfolios were submitted for the competition. Twelve of these were pre-selected for projection by a panel comprising Martin Edge, Linda Pitkin, Martha Tressler and Brian Pitkin. The judges choices were collated by JP Trenque, who also prepared the excellent slideshow for projection at the meeting.

In addition to the top three the following portfolios were pre-selected for projection:- Gareth Millson, Nick Robertson-Brown, Joss Woolf, Paul Morgan, Georgette Douwma, Trevor Rees, Keith Lyall, Debi Henshaw and Paul Colley.

'Pre-selecting 12 portfolios was a very difficult task as the standard was overall high' said Brian Pitkin. 'The top and bottom half dozen portfolios were easy to identify, it was those in between that were most challenging'.

All of the portfolios were projected to the audience of about 100 BSoUP Members and guests present who were invited to vote for their favouriie three. And their task was even more difficult than the judges, who had as much time as they needed over the preceeding weekend to make their pre-selection.

How the top six scored:-

Position No. Photographer Points Firsts
1 10 Jane Morgan 78 12
2 3 Martyn Guess 64 13
3 8 Saeed Rashid 36 9
4 12 Gareth Millson 34 5
5 2 Nick Robertson-Brown 33 4
6 4 Joss Woolf 30 7
