BSoUP October Meeting

The next BSoUP meeting takes place at 7.30 for 8 p.m. on Wednesday 18 October at the Holland Club, Imperial College, South Kensington. We are trying hard to start on time given so many of our members make the effort to travel into London and need to 'escape' at a reasonable time for trains etc.

We have a fascinating evening lined up this month, offering two very diverse but equally absorbing subjects from image libraries to dangerous marine life:

Photo libraries by Matthew Ford

Matthew is the powerhouse behind Oceans-Image, an image library dedicated to underwater photographs and designed to service all levels of editorial content - from major newspapers and glossy magazines to advertising and design. Matthew has an impressive photographic pedigree having been a freelance photographer for the Times, photographer for the Daily Mail and USA Daily Mail and has been published by numerous international agencies, newspapers, magazines, design companies and corporate organisations.

The concept of Oceans-Image, like many successful projects, was roughly sketched on the

back of a beer soaked envelope between Matthew and Graeme Gourlay of Circle Publishing, publisher of Dive Magazine. Graeme brought his huge wealth of experience on one of the premier dive magazines in Europe and Matthew brought his success as an international photographer with long and robust relationships with the library/agency world. Oceans-Image was born. Check it out at www.oceans-image.com.

Best of British Competition

Kicking off the season of our prestigious annual portfolio competitions, the Best of British is open to paid-up members only. Each member can submit a portfolio of six images arranged in two rows of
three. All portfolios will be judged by the audience present at the meeting. The winner will receive the BSoUP Best of British Trophy and a cheque for £100 donated by Sport Diver Magazine, who
reserve the right to publish the winning portfolio. Please check the detailed rules and use the on-line Competitions entry form. Deadline for all entries is midnight, Tuesday 17 October.

Hazardous marine life by Linda Pitkin

Linda is a hugely accomplished underwater photographer and has been a popular and regular member of BSoUP for 26 years. During this time she has published four books and been awarded numerous awards in national and international competitions. She currently has an exhibition showing at the London Zoo, and there is more information about this and her photography generally on her website www.lindapitkin.net

Linda will describe the fascinating marine life which, if interacted with carelessly, can be harmful and/or dangerous. These range from the many commonly encountered, such as sea urchins and fire coral, to the few spectacular and rare, such as great white sharks. In addition to her own photographs, she will show several kindly lent by other photographers.

We hope you will be able to join us for a great evening - if not please do consider entering the competition anyway - someone has to win.
