DIVE SITES 2001

Peter Rowlands reviewed the 'Dive Sites 2001' competition, projecting and discussing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed slides and the winning Portfolio.

Peter mentioned computer manipulated images and said he would have liked to have seen more entries in this category.

The Video section was also disappointing with too few entries from both professional and amateur photographers.

Charles Hood, 'Underwater Photographer of the Year', in the 'Dive Sites 2001' competition, projected his winning entries describing his selection and how and where they were taken. There were over 2,838 entries and the final selection was made by Kurt Amsler and David Doubilet.

Colin Doeg briefly reviewed the recent DEMA Show, describing many of the new products on show.

FOCUS ON

The theme for this month's FOCUS ON competition was 'Natural Light'. In both fourth and third places with 28 and 33 points respectively was ALEX MUSTARD. In second place with 45 points was GEROME HARRIS with his slide of a kelp forest and this month's winner with 63 points was BOB ALLEN. Bob's slide will go forward to the final in October 2001 Focus On final.

MAIN EVENT

The MAIN EVENT for February was a presentation by PAUL KAY, 'British Underwater Photographer of the year', Dive Sites 2001.

Paul treated us with some beautiful slides of British creatures, mostly taken in North Wales, sponges, crabs, cuttlefish, octopus, urchins and blennies, some taken with lovely green and blue backgrounds. Paul showed some beautiful coloured anemones taken around the Gower peninsula, South Wales, describing some of the Mediterranean varieties to be found in that area. Paul then took us through the Snowdonia area with some stunning shots of the lakes and mountains.

A most enjoyable end to an interesting evening.
