BSoUP International Focus on Competition 2006

BSoUP's second International Competition was judged at the Society's August meeting. Entries were received from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Egypt, France, Germany, Monaco, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, the Slovak Republic, Spain, Switzerland, Turks and Caicos and the UK.

JP Trenque presented the images in a powerpoint presentation, which was shown twice, the second time a little quicker than the first. The 70 members of the audience then voted for their favourite first, second and third image.

The winner, with 48 points, was MARTIN TOMCYK from the Slovak Republic, with an split (above/under) shot of a frog waving at the camera.

Born in 1970 in Slovakia, Martin has been diving since 1999 and taking pictures underwater since 2000. He uses a Nikon F80 camera in a SEALUX housing with Sea and Sea YS 90 strobes. Despite having taken pictures in many countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, his most successful shot was taken on a lunch break just a few kilometres outside his hometown. It is an image of a little frog standing on its back legs, with an arm stretched out as if waving right at you.

This picture was taken in Gader Valley (Slovakia) in a small lake during the frogs coupling time.

Martin was awarded several prizes at international UW festivals, such as World Festival of Underwater Pictures Antibes Juan Les Pin, MARMARA Istanbul, LAUPS Los Angeles, SUBIOS Seychelles, SanDisk Red Sea Israel, Golden Dolphin Moscow, MFPF Vysoke Tatry,  PAF Tachov and BSoUP.
