I’m 28 and I’m from a small town in the east coast of Sardinia, Italy. I graduated in Marine Sciences at Genoa University and I came to England for a Master in Coastal Engineering. I’m currently living in Southampton and I’m doing a PhD in Coastal Sciences at the National Oceanography Centre. In particular I’m looking at how seagrass influence waves and sediment dynamics.
My parents have always shared their passion for the sea and marine life with me. I’ve been snorkeling and sailing all my life. I’ve first dived when I was 12, in Sardinia, in 3 m of water with no BCD! The next summer I went to Belgium and took an Astronaut training course for teenagers, where we were shown how the Astronauts are trained to work in zero gravity. So I dived again in a massive tank at the European Space Agency! Since 1998 I have been an Advanced Open water diver.
I’ve been always playing with SLR cameras on land, but it wasn’t until I met my boyfriend Alex that I was able to realise what seemed like an impossible dream to take photos underwater. I took my first underwater photos 1 year ago in Cayman Islands, using my Nikon D80 in a housing borrowed from Ikelite. I have tried to attend most of the BSOUP meetings during the past year and to learn as much as possible from so many experienced photographers.
The photos in the portfolio were all taken on my second trip as a photographer in Bali during September. I used my D80 in Subal housing with Sea and Sea YS30 strobes. I based the portfolio on two complementary colours, blue and orange. I’ve chose this arrangement of the pictures in an attempt to guide the viewer in a clockwise circle.
