The
annual Beginners Portfolio Competition for the DIVER Trophy
attracted only 11 entries. Each portfolio was projected twice
and the audience present invited to vote for their favourite
three.
Fourth
place with 47 points went to GARY CLARK. Third place with
50 points went to DARIO NAVARO. Second place with 62 points
went to MARTHA TRESSLER. The winner with 86 points was SUE
HEAPS.
Sue
from Stevenage in Hertfordshire, was unable to be present
at the meeting,. She was, however, "surprised and delighted
to receive the DIVER Trophy and cash prize of £100" donated
by Bernard Eaton of Diver Magazine at her branch (Stevenage
Sub-Aqua Club) annual meeting two weeks later.
Sue
undertook her first Open Water dive ten years ago. Four years
later her husband, "who could never be persuaded to get his
face underwater", gave her a Nikonos III and Sunpak Marine
32 flashgun as a present. "Thousands of prints and slides
and several underwater photography courses later (not to mention
the trail of flooded equipment), my photography progressed
slowly. A few years ago I acquired a Nikonos 801S and a second-hand
Subal housing, but I still have my faithful Nikonos III for
natural light shots and as a backup."
All
of Sue's slides were taken in 1997 in the Red Sea on two different
live-aboard trips out of Sharm-el-Sheikh, using a Nikon 801S
in a Subal housing. Lenses used were the full frame fish-eye,
20mm and 60mm macro.
Sue's
portfolio comprised a fire coral & sunburst taken at Little
Temple, a close-up of fire coral at South Laguna, her buddy
on the wreck of the Carnatic, pin cushion urchin spines taken
at Little Temple, and eagle ray taken at Ras um Sid and a
close-up of a soft coral taken at South Laguna. Apart from
the wreck shot, which was taken using natural light, Sue lit
her shots with a Sea & Sea YS120 or YS50 flashgun and
used Fuji Velvia for close-up and mcaro shots and Fuji Sensia
for natural light for wide-angle shots.
