Beginners Portfolio Competition 1996

Winner - Hilary Driscoll

Giannis D, a Black & White copy one of Hilary's winning portfolio colour slides

A first-class diver, Hilary Driscoll only began to take her photography seriously about five years ago though she has owned a camera since 1984. The pictures in her winning portfolio were taken in the Red Sea or Sipadan. The one which gave her the greatest buzz to take is a striking slide of a Spanish Dancer.

Thrilled

She was thrilled when she found it during a night dive at Jackson Reef - the first one she had found herself - though it was only when she shone her torch on it that she realised it was a nudibranch rather than a sea slug.

Her portfolio was taken using a Nikon F801s in a Subal housing with an SB25 strobe in a Kevin Cullimore housing and 14mm, 60mm and 105min lenses.

She dives regularly with Linda Dunk and the pair are ideal buddies, bouncing ideas off each other, discussing photographic problems, posing for each other and analysing the results together.
Originally, they used to buy contrasting items of equipment, like a 60min and a 105 mm macro lens, and swop them but now they have each built up outfits of their own.

Magical

Said Hilary: "It has been absolutely magic for both of us. We talk about what we have taken and compare notes.

We look at each other's pictures and make constructive comments about them.

We dive as a buddy pair but our rapport is such that we can each concentrate on our own particular project while still know instantly and instinctively where each other is.

It is a terrific confidence booster to be able to share your thoughts with some?
one."

Half her winning slides were taken on night dives. The others, including a shot of the stem of the Giannis D and a closefocus wide-angle picture in which Linda Dunk posed for her, were taken on dives during the day.

Responsibilities

Hilary began diving in 1980 and is currently chairman and branch instructor of Potters Bar Branch, as well as area coach for the BSAC's Eastern Region.

She originally had a Nikonos V outfit but it was stolen. Subsequently she replaced it with a Subal housing and her Nikon equipment.

In addition, she is BSoUP's secretary, having accepted the position at the last annual meeting.
