Each year the British Society of Underwater Photographers organises a
National competition for Beginners. This annual event, sponsored by
DIVER magazine, is open to any underwater photographer who has not
won first, second or third place in a National or International
Underwater Photographic Competition.
Entrants had been invited to submit a portfolio of
six 35 mm slides of their own choice, taken anywhere in the world.
Aquarium shots were ineligible. All slides had to be mounted in GEPE
glass mounts and bear the photographer's name and address on the
reverse side. A coloured spot had to be placed in the bottom
left-hand corner of the mount (when the slide is viewed the right way
up and the right way round).
All portfolios were projected at the November
meeting of BSoUP on Wednesday 17 November in the Holland Club,
Sherfield Building, Imperial College, London SW7. Entries were judged
by the audience present at the meeting.
More than twenty portfolios were received. Fourth
place with 35 points went to SUE HEAPS. There was a tie for second
place between LINDA DUNK and KEN SULLIVAN who both scored 40 points.
The winner with 51 points was GAVIN ANDERSON, who was presented with
the DIVER trophy for the Best Beginner's Portfolio.
Gavin, who lives in Fife, has been diving for
six years and taking underwater photographs for three, although he
used to photograph top side for fun before taking shots underwater.
His portfolio comprised four slides taken in the Cayman Islands in
1992 - a wide-angle shot of a diver with a stingray, a close-up of a
French Angel, a macro shot of an Arrow Crab and a wide-angle
diver/boat shot with a red tube sponge in the fore-ground. Gavin's
fifth slide, a close-up of a featherstar on a red encrusting sponge,
was taken in the Gulf of Aqaba last year. His final slide, a
wide-angle shot of a diver in a wreck, was taken on the west coast of
Scotland, near Oban.
