This
annual event, sponsored by DIVER Magazine. is open to any
underwater photographer who has not won first, second or third
place in a major National or International Underwater Photographic
Competition, such as Brighton '87, Cameras beneath the Waves,
or the BSoUP Splash-In
A
total of 22 portfolios, each of six slides, were received
in time to enter the competition. Each of these was projected
twice at the November meeting of the Society and Judged by
the audience present. |

There
was a tie for second place between GEORGE GORNACZ and MATT
RUGLYS whose portfolios each received 29 points. George's
six slides were all taken in tropical waters, five on the
east coast of Australia at Heron Island and the sixth in the
Sudanese Red Sea. They included a natural light shot of lacks,
a diver with a yellow Trumpet Fish, Grunts and Jacks, a Green
Turtle, a Sea-snake and a Grey Reef Shark. George has been
taking pictures underwater for about 10 year's but until recently
used a Rolleimarine large format camera. The acquisition of
a Nikonos II and a 15 mm lens enabled him to use 35 mm and
enter the competition. Matt's six slides were also taken in
tropical waters and included natural light, balanced light
and macro photographs.
The
winner with 79 points was ALFREDO ROCK. Alfredo has been working
in Saudi Arabia for about five years. He started diving in
late 1984 and took up underwater photography in early 1985.
He qualified as a PADI Instructor in late 1986, Alfredo's
six slides were all taken in the Red Sea, five in Sudan whilst
on the Lady Jenny V and the sixth in Jeddah. They included
a shot of a diver (Tamara Double) with a Video camera, a subtle
combination shot using balanced light and a background silhouette
of a diver, a balanced light shot of a diver pursuing a shoal
of fish, and portraits of a silky shark, sweet lips and barracuda.
All except one of the pictures was taken using a Canon F?1
in a Uniflex housing with a dome port and lit with a Nikonos
SB 103 strobe on Ektachrome 64.
Unfortunately
Alfredo was not at the meeting. so presentation of the prestigious
DIVER Trophy and a cash prize kindly donated by BERNARD EATON,
Editor of DIVER Magazine had to be held over.
