Beginners Portfolio Competition 1988

FOR THE DIVER TROPHY

WINNER - ALFREDO ROCK

by Brian Pitkin

Reproduced from in focus 30 (January 1989)

This annual event, sponsored by DIVER Magazine. is open to any underwater photographer who has not won first, second or third place in a major National or International Underwater Photographic Competition, such as Brighton '87, Cameras beneath the Waves, or the BSoUP Splash-In

A total of 22 portfolios, each of six slides, were received in time to enter the competition. Each of these was projected twice at the November meeting of the Society and Judged by the audience present.

Red whip coral and diver by Alfredo Rock. One of six slides which won Alfredo the Diver Trophy

Silky shark, one of Alfredo Rock's portfolio slides which won the Diver Trophy

There was a tie for second place between GEORGE GORNACZ and MATT RUGLYS whose portfolios each received 29 points. George's six slides were all taken in tropical waters, five on the east coast of Australia at Heron Island and the sixth in the Sudanese Red Sea. They included a natural light shot of lacks, a diver with a yellow Trumpet Fish, Grunts and Jacks, a Green Turtle, a Sea-snake and a Grey Reef Shark. George has been taking pictures underwater for about 10 year's but until recently used a Rolleimarine large format camera. The acquisition of a Nikonos II and a 15 mm lens enabled him to use 35 mm and enter the competition. Matt's six slides were also taken in tropical waters and included natural light, balanced light and macro photographs.

The winner with 79 points was ALFREDO ROCK. Alfredo has been working in Saudi Arabia for about five years. He started diving in late 1984 and took up underwater photography in early 1985. He qualified as a PADI Instructor in late 1986, Alfredo's six slides were all taken in the Red Sea, five in Sudan whilst on the Lady Jenny V and the sixth in Jeddah. They included a shot of a diver (Tamara Double) with a Video camera, a subtle combination shot using balanced light and a background silhouette of a diver, a balanced light shot of a diver pursuing a shoal of fish, and portraits of a silky shark, sweet lips and barracuda. All except one of the pictures was taken using a Canon F?1 in a Uniflex housing with a dome port and lit with a Nikonos SB 103 strobe on Ektachrome 64.

Unfortunately Alfredo was not at the meeting. so presentation of the prestigious DIVER Trophy and a cash prize kindly donated by BERNARD EATON, Editor of DIVER Magazine had to be held over.
