The
Beginners' Competition for the Best Portfolio, organised by
BSoUP and sponsored by DIVER magazine, has been held annually
since 1980. Winners since that first National event have included
GRAHAM PATTIE, BRIAN HUMPHREYS, MIKE VALENTINE, LINDA PITKIN
and VIV PEARSON.
At
our November meeting last, the DIVER Trophy and a cash prize
of £50, donated by Bernard Eaton of DIVER magazine,
were presented to MARTIN EDGE, who beat twenty other beginner's
with his excellent portfolio of six slides. Martin's portfolio
scored a total of 93 points, In second place, with 82 points
was MICHAEL WONG, and in third place, with 53 points was PHIL
KONIOTES.
The majority of Martin's portfolio slides were preplanned.
They included photographs of a Spanish Dancer, a wreck shot,
glass fish in a cave, a silhouette shot of soft corals and
two unusual diver / marine life shots.
Martin started diving in 1979 and took up underwater photography
just over a year later. He lives and works in the Poole area
and dives on the Dorset coast during the spring and summer
months.
He
took his first photographs with a Nikonos III with 35 mm lens
and American Sonic Research flashgun. Following a trip to
Florida in 1982, Martin made his first audio visual, He entered
Brighton '83, the International Festival of Underwater Photography,
where one of his prints was exhibited.
Since
Joining BSoUP in 1984, Martin has acquired an Oceanic 2003
and replaced his Subawider with a Nikonos 15 mm lens, purchased
secondhand from another BSoUP member.
Last
year, after his first trip to the Red Sea, he combined his
talents with Jim Eldridge to produce 'Sea of Dreams', a superb
six projector audio visual, which was shown at BSoUP and 'Cameras
beneath the Waves'. This year, conditions permitting, he hopes
to photograph sharks off the Dorset coast and is off to the
Maldives in November.
