Beginners Portfolio Competition 1983

Winner - Linda Pitkin

by Brian Pitkin

Above: Winner of the Best Beginners Portfolio Competition 1983, Linda Pitkin (right) with BSoUP's President, David George (left).

The annual competition for the DIVER Trophy for the Best Beginner's Portfolio organised by BSoUP was held at the November meeting following the A.G.M. Anyone who had not won a place in a major competition was invited to submit a portfolio of six slides of their choice, all taken underwater, to compete for this important trophy.

The audience present were invited to vote for their favourite three portfolios, in order of preference. Each portfolio was projected twice and then the votes collected for counting. After a short break the results were announced, as usual in reverse order. Brian Pitkin came third with 39 points. Charles Hood came second with 118 points. In first place with 144 points was LINDA PITKIN.

BSoUP's President, David George, presented Linda with the attractive DIVER Trophy, which comes with a £50 cash prize, kindly donated by Bernard Eaton of DIVER, incorporating Underwater Worlds Magazine. Last year's winner, Mike Valentine also generously donated two tickets for next February's 'The Best of British' underwater film and audio visual spectacular at Imperial College, London.

Extremely pleased at winning Linda said 'When I took up diving I had no thought of taking photographs underwater. But one fateful day my husband Brian handed me his camera, set up ready, for me to take a photo of him. I was instantly hooked. I soon picked up a second?hand Nikonos II and flashgun and I am rarely persuaded to enter the water without it now. I started with close up and macro photography, difficult enough when subjects won't cooperate and pose in that framer, but with fewer variables to contend with than wider angle photography. More recently I've been having a go with wider angle photography too.

I've been taking photographs for three years, mostly in British waters, although I have visited the Red Sea. I find that British waters are almost as exciting and rewarding for photography!.
