Highly Commended - John Dory by David Stephens
I started diving back in 1993 with PADI and almost as soon as I qualified I became fascinated with underwater photography. I learnt the basics with an Aquashot ( a disposable camera inside a small plastic housing). I then progressed onto a Nikonos IV, then a Nikon F90 SLR and finally onto the Nikon D100 which I still use.
I live in Pontllanfraith, South Wales and to finance my photography trips I work as a quality assurance co-ordinator at the infamous Pot Noodle factory. I am a member of both Bristol Underwater Photography Group and BSOUP and enjoy diving in British waters as much as overseas.
The image of the John Dory was taken in October 2008 under Swanage pier in Dorset. The John Dory is one of my favourite British fish and I was fortunate that when I came across this one at the end of the pier is stayed with me for 15-20 minutes. It enjoyed following my bubbles up to the surface and then returning to where I was positioned on the seabed, often positioning itself so close to the port that I couldn’t focus on it. I used the Nikon D100 with a 60mm lens in a Sea & Sea housing with twin Sea & Sea strobes.
