Winner - Sunlight in Cave by Alan Larsen
'I’ve been diving for ten years and as I had always travelled with a camera on land, it was inevitable that I would eventually take one underwater. I bought my first underwater camera in 2003: a housed Olympus 5050. Two years ago when I took it on my first photo workshop to Lembeh Strait in March 2007, I realised that taking photos underwater had become as important as diving. That year I moved from the Olympus to my current dSLR set up of Nikon D200 in Subal housing with twin Inon strobes.
The image was taken in July 2008 in Jackfish Alley at Ras Mohammed in the Red Sea. It was just after midday, so the sun was high and the light streaming vertically through the roof of the cave. Exposure is ½ sec at f3.5 on ISO 200 with natural light; and the lens a Tokina 10-17mm at 10mm. I wedged myself into a convenient niche in the rock, held the camera against the wall to keep it still… and held my breath!'
