Are
you under 30 years old and interested in underwater photography.
Yes? Then YUP wants to hear from you! YUP, true to its name,
is a new Internet based group for young underwater photographers.
This group has come about to help make it easier to get into
underwater photography, which can be especially difficult
for young people. Making the right choices when starting out
is essential, and mistakes are costly. YUP has been set up
to help.
The
main aims of YUP are to encourage more young people to get
into underwater photography, to provide an information resource
and to put young photographers in contact with each other.
In the UK one of our main objectives is to get more young
people involved in BSoUP. Indeed two YUP members are giving
"main event" talks during 2002. But we also hope to see young
people succeeding in Focus On competitions, at the Splash-in
and contributing articles to In Focus. You have been warned!
As
I said above, YUP is based solely on the Internet, the URL
of the web-site is http://www.yup.org.uk
The web-site contains a comprehensive set of links to Internet
resources on underwater photography. There are links to camera,
flash and housing manufacturers, shops, societies and to personal
web-sites of top underwater photographers. Each member also
has a gallery page (and I can say that YUP members love to
try out new techniques) and a biography file, with topics
including photographic style, kit, and favourite photographers,
as well as our silliest mistakes! There is also a dairy of
forthcoming events in the world of underwater photography,
such as competitions, talks, conferences, and festivals.
Having
been started this year in the UK, we are mainly British, but
we already have members from Poland and Finland. One of the
advantages of being on the Internet is that we can be truly
international, and we hope to attract members from all corners
of the globe. Best of all joining YUP is free! We are particularly
keen for photographers who are just strating out, to get in
touch. If you can avoid some of the mistakes we have made,
YUP will be worthwhile. If you are interested in joining please
send an e-mail to a.mustard@soc.soton.ac.uk
So
next time you are surfing the net, check out www.yup.org.uk
Not only are there some inspirational images, but the site
is a great source of information for young photographers of
all ages!
