Monthly Meetings

Thanks to our speakers at the monthly meetings this year (in chronological order) - Mark Koekemoer, Joss Woolf, Alex Tattersall, Colin Doeg, Mark Webster, Nick Robertson-Brown, Helen Rushton, Paul Morgan, Zac Macaulay, Keith Lyall, David Allan, Sheilah Openshaw, Paul Colley, Richard Smith, Jo Horrocks,Pete Ladell, Alan Larsen, Martha Tressler, Brian Pitkin, Paul Duxfield, Linda Pitkin, Paul Rose and Dan Bolt.


Three issues of our Magazine ‘in focus’ were published and circulated to members. Thanks to Joss Woolf (editor), Mike Russell, Paul Morgan, Gavin Parsons, Chris McTernan and all contributors.


The BSoUP website continues to grow and has more than 1,800 pages and 20,000 images. The main menu was upgraded to a drop down menu and the Home page redesigned as some felt it contained too much information. In addition the entire website was upgraded (to XHTML 1.0 Transitional doctype and utf encoding) and subsequently validated (using WC3’s Markup Validation Service).  Thanks to Brian Pitkin who upgrades, updates and maintains the website.


The number of BSoUP members and non-members who have joined the group increased substantially this year. There are now over 700 in the group, which is more than twice the number of BSoUP members.

Dive Shows

BSoUP exhibited at the LIDS 2012 and DIVE 2012 to promote the society and underwater photography.  Thanks to all those BSoUP members who manned the stand. We also staged the BSoUP/DIVER Print competition at DIVE 2012 at which members of the public were invited to vote. Nearly 1,000 visitors did so. Martin Davies gave a talk in the Photozone at both shows on behalf of BSoUP.


Congratulations to the monthly competition winners: Alex Tattersall, Rob Bailey, Keith Lyall, Alex Tattersall (twice!), Trevor Rees, Pash Baker, Rob White, and Shafraz Naeem, Trevor Rees, Jane Morgan and Paul Woodburn. Thanks to JP Trenque, Brian Pitkin and other committee members who created the meeting’s competition slideshows.

The British Underwater Championship (Splash-In) was won by Tim Priest, with Charles Erb, Rob White and Martin Davies winning the Mankind in the Sea, Theme and Humour categories respectively. The Compact Camera winner was Paula Bailey. Congratulations to all.

BSoUP/ Diver Print Competition had 180 entries from 76 people. 80 were short-listed to be displayed at LIDS and over 1,000 people voted for the category winners. The grand prize was awarded by a panel of judges to Joss Woolf; category winners were Saeed Rashid (British & Irish and Overseas), Alex Tattersall (Advanced Overseas), Eleonora Manca (Advanced British & Irish) and Atanas Petrov (The Wildlife Trusts category).

BSoUP lauched a competition for the Martin Edge Award, which was won by Heather Morris. Congratulations.

Linda Pitkin and Alex Mustard contributed their underwater photos to the 2020VISION project, exhibition and book. The latter was published in August with the launch of the 2020VISION Roadshow.

Congratulations to BSoUP Members Ross Gudgeon who won the Temperate Waters  category in The Australasia Challenge and was the winner in Our World Underwater Competitions, Jo Horrocks who came first and second in the Video Snapshot category at NCUPS 2012, Rico Besserdich  who was declared the World Champion and Nick Blake and Paul Colley who won Gold in the 2011/12 Competition and Matt Doggett who was the overall winner of  the British Wildlife Photography Awards.

Regional talks

BSoUP Members Dan Bolt and Alex Mustard, Linda PitkinandMartin Edgegave presentations to the regional groups BUPG, SUPS and NUPG respectively. BSoUP Members who are also members of one or more of these regional groups also gave talks.

Judging International u/w photography competitions

BSoUP members Martin Edge and Alex Mustard were on the panels of judges in the Ocean Art Photo and Our World Underwater competitions respectively

Invited speakers

BSOUP members Alex Mustard and Linda Pitkin were invited speakers at DEMA and Boot respectively. Alex Mustard and Martin Edge were invited speakers at LIDS 2012.


BSoUP published a photobook entitled ‘Images taken in British waters’ featuring BSoUP Members images which was compiled by Alison Mayor. Thanks to Alison and all those who contributed.

BSoUP member Gavin Parsons published ‘Playing with the sharp end and other stories’ for Kindle.

BSoUP member Steve Jones published 140 images in ‘Pearls of the Caribbean HD’ for iPAD.
